The Los Angeles Dodgers secured the National League West crown with their 7-2 victory over the rival San Diego Padres on Thursday night. Entering the series with San Diego, Los Angeles was only three games ahead, making it the most important series of the season.

After giving up the opener to the Padres, fear began to creep in that the Dodgers would lose the division to their rivals. But the team fought back, winning the final two games of the series and ultimately securing their 11th league title in the last 12 seasons.

It was a total team effort, but the Dodgers were led by superstar Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani has given everything the Dodgers could have wanted this season and more, giving them an extra boost all year long.

He’s had tears in his eyes lately as he prepares for his first-ever postseason appearance. But in the final three games of the regular season, Ohtani also has a chance to do something special.

He currently leads the NL in home runs and runs batted in. However, he ranks third in batting average. If Ohtani can move into first place, he would win the Triple Crown.

While it’s unlikely with such a short window, doubting Ohtani was never a good idea. He currently has a .305 batting average as of Friday, right behind the Atlanta Braves’ Marcell Ozuna, who has a .310 average.

Both players trail the Padres’ Luiz Arraez, who has a .312 batting average as of last weekend. Arraez has been a batting champion in each of the last two seasons, so it would probably take a bit of a slump to lose the top spot.

However, this is still something to keep an eye on as the Dodgers head into the final weekend against the Colorado Rockies. Playing at Coors Field could help boost Ohtani’s chances, as it is known for strange occurrences, particularly among hitters.

MILWAUKEE – The Mets defeated the Atlanta hurricane, losing just one game in their terror city and remaining mostly dry and completely alive – both in reality and in the standings. So this is better than previous trips there.

There’s a good chance the Mets will have to endure an unwanted trip back to Atlanta to play a game or even two on Monday, which is particularly inconvenient since their potential postseason begins on Tuesday. But let’s not worry about that now. They say they aren’t, and that’s really what matters.

Today the team from Queens is thrilled to be here in beautiful Milwaukee. While it’s undeniably a great spot on a great lake – the city’s apt slogan – it’s not typically known as a place where people come for the better weather.

But as Atlanta dries out after battling Hurricane Helene, it’s so perfect here that the roof of American Family Field should remain open Friday night for the first game of a series that means everything to the Mets and virtually nothing to the Brewers.

Despite not playing for two days in a row and not winning in four days, things are still looking mostly positive for the Mets as they head into what will most likely not be the final series of the regular season. No analytical genius was on hand to give the exact odds to avoid returning to Atlanta for one or possibly two games on Monday, but they all know that great play is required here – and a little luck to make the return trip to Dixie to avoid. where they can expect the unusual brand of Southern hospitality that the Braves often provide.

“We’ve had a lot of strange things this season, so we’re just going to keep playing,” Mets baseball boss David Stearns said of the possibility Monday.

The message is that they don’t think about what seems inevitable and don’t worry about future inconveniences. They will continue to focus on the series here. They also know – regardless of the travel schedule – that their playoff odds remain (slightly) positive.

The Mets’ normally upbeat mood will likely be brightened by their escape from Atlanta, where they only experienced a few drops of rain before departing. Once they were above the clouds, Adam Ottavino noted, they knew they were OK.

The other reason to be particularly hopeful is that, while Stearns’ old Brewers team is excellent, it doesn’t care nearly as much about these games. No matter what happens here this weekend, the Brewers are seeded No. 3 because they dominate an otherwise sluggish NL Central (and also lose the season series to the Phillies, meaning the tiebreaker goes to Cheesesteaks over Cheeseland). .

The Brewers may host the Mets again, but it could also be the Braves or Diamondbacks. So their appeal in this series borders on irrelevant.

While it’s not a requirement for them, Milwaukee would prefer to have the Mets and Braves play in Atlanta on Monday if one of those teams turns out to be their first-round opponent. (Yes, I looked, the Brew Crew decision-makers kind of enjoy the Mets and Braves wasting more bullets on Monday and losing more sleep those few nights – but not to the point where they’re doing their best and their waste your own bullets.)

As for the Mets, they don’t think three days ahead.

“We can’t really worry about Monday at this point,” Stearns said. “Whenever we finish on Sunday, they tell us where we have to go and if we have to go.”

The Mets get a bit of a break from the Brewers’ situation as both the Braves and D-Backs face teams with a little more to gain than the opponent’s comfort. Atlanta plays the Royals, who need a win (or a Twins loss) to secure a playoff spot. Arizona plays the rival Padres, who need a win to secure the No. 4 seed and home field in round one.

Either way, the Mets should be happy with their situation and themselves. After starting 0-5 and eventually falling under .500 for 11 games, this is still a pretty good situation. While it’s not ideal and a potential trip to Atlanta isn’t something to celebrate, the Mets are in a much better spot than most would have expected outside of their own clubhouse.

To place an order for the free rapid antigen COVID-19 tests, go to COVIDTests.gov. The website provides a link to the order form via the USPS website, answers to frequently asked questions, and information on how to verify that currently expired COVID tests are still usable.

The only information required for the online order form is your name, email address (if you would like shipping notifications for your order) and a shipping address.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), which represents 85,000 workers at ports from Texas to Maine, including 700 at the Port of New Orleans, is planning a strike next week.

In a video posted on YouTube, ILA President Harold J. Daggett explained the potential impact of the strike and predicted widespread economic disruption.

“The first week there will be news everywhere: boom, boom. In the second week, people who sell cars won’t sell cars because the cars won’t come off the ships. Everything in the United States comes from a ship. They go out of business. Construction workers are being laid off because materials are no longer being delivered,” Daggett said.

Contract negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents 40 shipping companies and terminal operators, have been on hold since June. The union is demanding better wages and assurances that ports will not fully automate their operations, which the ILA says would put thousands of jobs at risk.

“They’re trying to get robots and things like that to do our jobs and put us out of business,” said Henry Glover, president of ILA Local No. 3000.

Tens of thousands of ILA members are ready to strike. At the Port of New Orleans, 700 workers are expected to join the planned strike. Longshoremen warn that without their presence at the docks, the public can expect shortages and supply chain disruptions.

“From cars to toilet paper to various chemicals. Anything shipped to the United States is unloaded by us,” Glover added.

Professor Ali Bustamante, director of the Department of Business and Economic Research at the University of New Orleans, says the impact of the strike depends on its duration.

“If we think about a strike that only lasts two weeks, that is very nominal considering that it will not have a significant impact on consumer prices. When we talk about a strike that threatens to last a month or more, we are talking about significant costs for consumers,” said Professor Bustamante.

The Port of New Orleans has declined interviews during ongoing negotiations. However, in a statement, a spokesman said the port had always maintained a “good” working relationship with ILA members and was preparing for a possible work stoppage on October 1.

The White House has called on both sides to resume talks, but with only a few days left, longshoremen say they will begin picketing Tuesday morning if a deal is not reached.

Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Republican Sen. JD Vance of Ohio will face off Tuesday in the first and only scheduled vice presidential debate before the Nov. 5 election.

The debate comes as early voting begins in several states including Minnesota and South Dakota and three weeks after former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris met on stage at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia over immigration, abortion, the economy, climate change and overseas there have been conflicts.

The high-risk event could be the last duel between all candidates before election day.

Tuesday’s debate is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET and last 90 minutes. The event will take place in New York City – a deep blue Democratic stronghold and former home of Trump – at the CBS Broadcast Center.

The event will be broadcast on CBS and live streamed on all platforms where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available. CBS said it plans to broadcast the debate simultaneously on different channels.

WADSWORTH, Ohio – Early Friday night at Art Wright Stadium, it looked like Mother Nature was playing the main role.

But as the night wore on, it was Wadsworth’s Brysen Hall who wrote the final chapter, as the freshman quarterback threw a touchdown pass in overtime that lifted the Grizzlies to a 21-14 victory over Hudson in a battle of undefeated teams in the Suburban led league national conference.

With the teams tied 14-14 after regulation time, Hudson won the coin toss and elected to play defense first in overtime. Hall and the Grizzlies made them pay for that decision.

After a penalty gave Wadsworth the lead on the first play, two plays later it was Hall who found Calix Lemp on the left side of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown.

“I saw the coverage I expected all week and I got the play call,” Hall said. “I knew that’s where I wanted to go if I got that look, so I was excited about the piece.”

The Wadsworth defense then took the field and stopped the Hudson offense without a first down ending the game.

“It was a shortened field, so that makes it a little more difficult,” Wadsworth head coach Justin Todd said. “So we played more man-to-man and our guys started applying more pressure.”

Wadsworth (6-0, 3-0) entered the evening ranked No. 6 in cleveland.com’s Top 25, while Hudson (3-3, 2-1) was ranked No. 15. They were two of the three teams that entered the Suburban League National undefeated along with Nordonia on Friday evening.

FRANKLIN – With everything on the line and the final seconds ticking away Friday night, Franklin senior quarterback Will Tirrell made a last-minute decision to run into the end zone.

Tirrell darted from left to right, beat two Duxbury defenders, kept the ball out and accelerated into the end zone with two seconds left. His 4-yard touchdown run gave the No. 10 Panthers a thrilling 21-19 victory over the visiting Dragons.

“There wasn’t a single kid out here that gave up,” Franklin coach Todd Kiley said. “There wasn’t a kid who didn’t believe we were going to win that football game.”

The Panthers (3-1) erased an early 13-0 hole in the first half, then rallied from a 19-14 deficit with 1:50 to go to prevail. Quarterback Justin Bianchetto (19 for 34 passes, 236 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) orchestrated an 86-yard drive and found Stephon Reed (6 catches, 101 yards) for a critical 40-yard catch and run for the ball to bring into the goal 4.

I thought it was so fun to get to play this character.
