Amazon deletes controversial video showing a manager wearing a necklace depicting the Palestinian flag over Israel

Amazon this week removed a controversial video showing a manager wearing a necklace with a Palestinian flag over Israel.

Ruba Borno, vice president of global specialists and partner organizations for Amazon Web Services, was featured in a video promoting the company’s upcoming AWS re:Invent conference. Although it wasn’t highlighted, some viewers became aware of the necklace and threatened to cancel their Amazon subscriptions in response.

After a few days of silence, Amazon deleted the video.

In a statement to Fox Business, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the video has been removed and will be replaced.

“The violence and loss of life that occurs every day in the Middle East is tragic, and at Amazon, our hearts and thoughts go out to every person or community affected. Our leadership remains in regular contact with our teams in the region to offer our assistance.” “The video recording was not intended as a political statement, but we have removed the video and will release a new one in the coming days,” it said Explanation.

Borno is a Palestinian refugee whose family lived in Kuwait until Saddam Hussein’s invasion in 1990. Shortly thereafter, she and her family moved to the United States with the help of the U.S. Embassy. She was discontinued by Amazon Web Services in November 2021.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Borno also works as a Young Global Leader for the World Economic Forum, where she has worked since 2019.

The video was made a few days after the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ deadly terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 101 people are still being held hostage. One of these people is Sasha Troufanov, an Amazon employee based in Israel.

Amazon has not yet admitted to its kidnapping.

Texas Football vs. Georgia: Point spread, odds and more

Texas Football vs. Georgia: Point spread, odds and more

University of Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian made a good, if obvious, point during his weekly press conference Monday morning.

There are no divisions in the SEC anymore and there are a lot of teams, 16 to be exact. In return, any blemish on your record drastically reduces your chances of playing in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta on December 7th.

As far as a path to the SEC Championship Game goes, Saturday night’s game between Texas and Georgia is huge.

The Longhorns are one of three SEC teams without a conference loss, along with Texas A&M and LSU. If Texas beats Georgia, there are still more games to play, but it would be very hard to imagine not playing in Atlanta in seven weeks.

The Bulldogs already have one conference loss. One second wouldn’t exclude her from the conversation, but it would make the journey to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium extraordinarily difficult.

When it comes to regular-season games played before the month of November, the stakes, which include the battle for a spot in the College Football Playoff, couldn’t be higher than what awaits Texas and Georgia.

Line: Texas (-3.5)

Money line: Texas -175, Georgia +150

Over/Under: 56.5 points

Story: Texas leads the all-time series against Georgia 4-1. The last meeting, a 28-21 victory for the Longhorns, came at the end of the 2018 season in the 2019 Sugar Bowl. In that game, Game MVP Sam Ehlinger finished 19 of 27 for 169 yards while adding 64 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. This victory gave then-head coach Tom Herman a 10-4 record in his second season. Saturday marks the first regular-season game between Texas and Georgia since Sept. 20, 1958, a 13-8 Longhorns win in Austin. The teams will compete again next season, which will be the teams’ first meeting in Athens, Georgia.

Cash doesn’t always come from the sidelines: Morning Brief

Cash doesn’t always come from the sidelines: Morning Brief

This is the conclusion of today’s Morning Brief, which you can read Sign in Delivered to your inbox every morning, along with:

The Federal Reserve kept interest rates at decade-long highs for more than a year. Investors took notice and poured money into money market accounts, seeking returns that hadn’t been available in more than a decade.

But since the Fed cut interest rates by half a percentage point on September 18, flows into money market accounts have not stopped. In fact, research from Crane Data provided to Yahoo Finance through Oct. 10 shows that money market fund assets have increased by about $180 billion since the Fed began cutting interest rates.

This reveals several truths about the rise of “cash on the sidelines,” which some argue could be a reason the stock market rally continues.

First of all, it could be a nod to the uncertainty some feel about how things will pan out next year.

On Friday, David Kostin, chief equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, wrote in a note to clients that “history does not particularly support expectations of a cash-to-equity rotation.” Kostin’s research shows that since 1984, in the top three , six and twelve months after the start of the Fed’s austerity measures, inflows into money market funds are greater than into stock or bond funds.

Kostin expressed a view we’ve written about in the past, noting that whether or not stocks see inflows after rate cuts has more to do with why the Fed cuts rates than with the rate cuts themselves .

“Money market funds have historically seen inflows following interest rate cuts regardless of the economic backdrop,” Kostin said. “On the other hand, equity funds typically experienced inflows when the U.S. economy avoided a recession and outflows when the U.S. economy entered a recession shortly after the austerity cycle began.”

This would tell us that some people who have cash may just be waiting. Just because the Fed is cutting interest rates doesn’t mean money has to go to the sidelines and come into play.

The continued rise in money market funds is also a reminder that while interest rates are lower than they were a month ago and are expected to fall further, they are still higher than they have been in years. For example, a Fidelity Government Money Market Fund currently offers an average annual return of more than 4.5%, compared to the 10-year average of about 1.4%.

“Right now, interest rates are just good enough and Americans are just nervous enough that cash looks like an attractive asset,” Callie Cox, chief market strategist at Ritholtz Wealth Management, told Yahoo Finance.

Cox noted that this phenomenon doesn’t always last long. Since 1980, on average, fund inflows begin to decline 14 months after the Fed begins austerity measures.

Cash on the sidelines is often cited as a reason to be optimistic about future stock purchases. The logic is that all the money that goes into money market funds ends up being used there. And while Cox believes this argument could be on a list of reasons to be bullish on the stock market, “it’s not at the top.”

“There is a lot of opportunistic cash in the money markets that could disappear over time, but I think then people have overestimated the impact,” Cox said. “It’s not this chunk of money that flows in after every interest rate cut. It’s a little more complicated than that.”

So ultimately the money usually leaves the cash. It could either be bonds when the economic environment is weakening and investors want to get an attractive return before it declines. Or it could extend to stocks if the fundamental story surrounding the Fed’s rate-cutting cycle continues to scream for a soft landing.

If the prospect of not knowing which scenario will prevail scares you, there is still a reasonable way to earn almost 5% per year. And you don’t have to look beyond the growing pile of cash on the sidelines to see that many investors continue to choose this path.

What we throw in October

What we throw in October

October; What a time of year to be a bass angler. Many anglers stow their rod and reel and pull out their bow or deer rifle. Others give up on pursuing bass after a lackluster September and opt for Saturday college football instead. But the rest of us, the die-hards, still head out on the water. And when we get there, we find fewer boats, more shallow bass, and a cool breeze on our faces. What a wonderful time of year to be a bass angler.

Today we will discuss some of the baits we use in October. I’ll take the Southeast and no doubt mention a few baits that work in other parts of the country this time of year. But I’ve also enlisted the help of a few hammers in the North, West and Deep South to give everyone something to grab hold of, no matter where you live. Clifford Perch, Jeff Gustafson and Scott Martin will all be reflecting on what October will look like back home. Here’s what we’re hosting in October.

SPINNERBAITS, SPINNERBAITS AND MORE SPINNERBAITS

October is the perfect time of year to throw one Spinnerbait. Bass push shallow across much of the country, seeking whatever cover they can find to lie in wait for passing prey. Whether the bass are stationed on docks, rocks or seawalls or hiding in vegetation and treetops, a spinnerbait is the perfect tool to target them. The Nichols catalyst proved to be one of my favorites last year.

In autumn there is often a bit of wind and/or a bit of color in the water. In either case, the spinning and tumbling blades of a spinnerbait closely mimic shad and other baitfish, and the slapping and flashing of the blades acts as a homing device to help bass focus on the bait. Add to that a spinnerbait’s fantastic hook ratio and propensity for big bites, and you can see why this is my favorite fall bait.

SURFACES

As we work our way through October, the water is really starting to cool down across much of the country, and the first few nights when the temperature is near freezing can really take a toll on the headwaters. Still, you’ll want to keep a topwater on deck until the last minute because this is still one of the best months of the year to cast BuzzbaitsSpooks, poppers, ploppers, Frogs and the like.

Shad and other baitfish congregate near the surface over deep water while schools of them simultaneously flood the shallows. This increased activity near the surface makes for world-class topwater fishing. Choose a bait that mimics food well and best suits the fish’s coverage and position. For example, if you’re targeting bass that are out in the open, a walking topwater that you can bombard is best. However, if the bass are hanging on the edge of a grass line instead, you’ll find that a buzzbait, toad, or hollow-bodied frog can traverse the terrain better than a bait with dangling treble hooks.

Jackall BlingJackall Bling

FLAT SIDED SQUAREBILLS

Although many associate shallow wobblers Since the water is extremely cold later in the winter, they are also great for fishing in the fall. There’s something about the profile, size and shine of a flat squarebill that really triggers bass exceptionally well in October. These baits, like that Jackall Bling For example, they still get through cover very well like a traditional squarebill, but can also dive a little deeper.

This is a great combination for the fall when the bass are in transition from deep to shallow water and may be a foot underwater at the base of a laydown area and then deeper in the branches of the nearest tree. The bling in particular has been one of mine and my dad’s fall favorites for over a decade. This lure casts really well, comes with a great set of hooks, and runs perfectly right out of the box.

quarter ounce lipless red-eye shadquarter ounce lipless red-eye shad

LIPLOSE CRANKBAITS

The lipless crankbait is synonymous with fall bass fishing. In October the bass are scattered all over the water in 30 to 20 or more feet of water. And there really is no other lure that can traverse this vast water column as well as a lipless crankbait.

Where ½- and even ¾-ounce Rat L-traps, Red-eye shads While other lipless plugs shine particularly well in early spring and the pre-spawn period, in the fall you will often find that a ¼ ounce lipless plug is most productive. While you can still definitely catch bass with a ½ ounce trap, going with a ¼ ounce lipless trap will usually imitate the bait better and give you the best chance of catching more fish while you At the same time also attract big bites.

AROUND THE COUNTRY

Now let’s take a look at the patterns that are emerging across the country. Here are some tips from professionals who know these regions best, directly from their own experience.

FLORIDA: SCOTT MARTIN

The best tip for bass fishing in October in Florida is to look for running water. As everyone knows, hurricane season is in full swing this time of year. We get a lot of rain and the water levels in our lakes tend to rise quickly.

Look for canals and pumping stations that pump water into or out of these lakes. There are huge schools of bass in these areas. Wobblers, topwaters and Carolina Rigs and even large swimbaits can produce some of the best bites.

large bait scents Pirch 1large bait scents Pirch 1

WEST COAST: CLIFFORD PIRCH

October is a fun time of year because there are a lot of things that work. The bass are everywhere in the water column. But I’m definitely leaning towards a top. The water is super clear (on many lakes in the West) so they have to travel a long way to find headwater. So I just throw it (a Rio Rico Popper) in coves around deep grass and man-made structures, things like that.

A brightly colored dropshot worm also works really well in the fall. They’re great for baitfish and I prefer bright colors, so my Big Bite Baits Cliffhanger in Cranberry or Polluted Dawn gets really good from mid to late October.

These are two large specimens that I have on deck that allow me to target fish at any depth zone, even suspended fish in dropshot with this bright worm. Of course, if you see them cooking, you can catch them on top. But they tend to do that one minute and go down to 40 or 50 feet the next minute. So it gives you two options to cast at them.

TO THE NORTH: JEFF GUSTAFSON

I’m spending October at home, Lake of the Woods, Rainy Lake. These are the typical large bodies of water in smallmouth country. Smallmouths begin grouping on rock piles and flats offshore where they will spend the winter, but do not eat much once the ice forms. So you’re in full swing with feeding right now.

You can still catch fish with crayfish-mimicking baits, but most fishing in the north really focuses on pelagic baitfish like smelt, alewives and herring, so baits that imitate these are the best. I’m a big fan of it Northland Smeltinator Jig provided with a tip Z-Man Jerk ShadZ. I choose the size of my bait based on the size of food the bass is spitting out, but my choice is usually a 3/8 oz, 2/0 jig with a 4-inch bait. Flutter spoons, hair jigs, drop shot rigs and umbrella rigs are also effective.

GET BITTEN THIS OCTOBER

One of the most important tips for fishing in October, no matter where you live, is having the right hatch. You hear this phrase a lot when it comes to fall fishing, so it’s become a bit of a cliché. However, it’s really important to not only look for areas where bait is present, but also to do everything you can to select a bait that looks and behaves similarly to the real thing. This will definitely help you get more bites this fall.

What Martin mentioned about the importance of running water in Florida is really something good that we should all keep in mind. Bass tend to hang out in moving water most of the year, but especially in the fall when water changes in many lakes can cause oxygen levels to deteriorate. Running water not only provides the fish with food, but it also aerates the water, just like the aerator in your aquarium. So that’s something else you should definitely look for.

Have a bait that closely mimics the forage in your area and look for areas where the bait is widely available. If you just start with these two simple tips, you’ll be able to implement them pretty well across the country come October.

Gladia believes that real-time processing represents the next frontier of audio transcription APIs

Gladia believes that real-time processing represents the next frontier of audio transcription APIs

French startup Gladia, which offers a speech recognition application programming interface (API), has raised $16 million in a Series A funding round. Essentially, Gladia’s API allows you to convert any audio file to text with high accuracy and fast turnaround time.

While Amazon, Microsoft and Google all offer speech-to-text APIs as part of their cloud hosting product suites, they are not as powerful as newer models from specialized startups.

There has been tremendous progress in this area in recent years, especially after OpenAI released Whisper. Gladia competes with other well-funded companies in the space, such as AssemblyAI, Deepgram and Speechmatics.

Gladia originally offered a fine-tuned version of Whisper’s speech-to-text model with some much-needed improvements. For example, the startup supports diarization out of the box – it can detect when multiple speakers are involved in a conversation and separate the recording and transcribed text depending on who is speaking.

Gladia supports 100 languages and a variety of accents. This reporter can confirm that it works, as we used Gladia to transcribe a few interviews and accents were not an issue.

The startup offers its speech-to-text model as a hosted API that users can use in their own applications and services. Over 600 companies use Gladia, including several meeting recorders and note-taking assistants such as Attention, Circleback, Method Financial, Recall, Sana, and Veed.io.

This particular use case is interesting because many companies need to chain API calls. They first convert speech into text, which they then feed into a large language model (LLM) such as GPT-4o or Claude 3.5 Sonnet to extract knowledge from large walls of text.

With the new funding, Gladia aims to simplify this pipeline by integrating audio intelligence and LLM-based tasks into a single API call. For example, a customer could receive a conversation summary generated from a handful of bullet points without relying on a third-party LLM API.

The other problem Gladia wants to solve is latency. You may have seen some demos of real-time audio conversations with an AI-based call agent (11x has a good demo on its website), and these systems need to be able to transcribe in near real-time to make such conversations sound human-like as possible.

“We found that real-time is generally not very good in terms of quality in the market. And people had a strange use case. They performed real-time processing, then grabbed the audio and ran it in batch. We asked ourselves, “Why are you doing this?” They told us, “The quality is not good with real-time processing, so we batch transcribe it afterwards,” co-founder and CEO Jean-Louis Quéguiner (pictured above; right) told TechCrunch .

Gladia has addressed this problem and is currently able to transcribe a live conversation with a latency of under 300 milliseconds. The company claims that real-time processing is now more or less as good as the standard asynchronous batch transcription API, but without proper testing it’s difficult for us to judge. As Quéguiner says, the startup aims for “batch quality with real-time capability.”

Aside from AI call agents, you can imagine a call center leveraging these real-time capabilities to help call agents find relevant information during a call. “Our single API is compatible with all existing tech stacks and protocols, including SIP, VoIP, FreeSwitch and Asterisk,” said co-founder and CTO Jonathan Soto (pictured above; left) in a statement.

XAnge led the Series A funding round. Illuminate Financial, XTX Ventures, Athletico Ventures, Gaingels, Mana Ventures, Motier Ventures, Roosh Ventures and Soma Capital also participated.

Gladia believes we are on the verge of a “ChatGPT moment” for audio applications. GPT technology has been around for years, but ChatGPT has really popularized LLMs with its chat-like interface for consumers.

When Apple or Google start integrating transcription models into iOS or Android, consumers will begin to understand the value of automated transcription in the apps they use. Developers will then likely integrate audio functionality into their products, and this is where API providers like Gladia will come into play.

Top 10 MLB Free Agent Relief Pitchers for 2025

Top 10 MLB Free Agent Relief Pitchers for 2025

Clay Holmes (Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images)

October baseball is in the air, which means the offseason isn’t long in coming. We identify the top MLB free agent teams that could be targeted this winter by taking a data-driven approach to this year’s group of players.

Below is our breakdown of the 15 best free agent relief pitchers in the 2025 class, with an emphasis on material quality and high-leverage experience. We dive deep into the top 10.

Our list leverages the work of MLB Trade Rumors for the free agent roster, as well as FanGraphs, Baseball Prospectus and Baseball Reference for player win values above baseline, Baseball Prospectus for DRA, StuffPro and PitchPro, and FanGraphs for all other data, including Stuff+ and Location+. We encourage our readers and subscribers to consider subscribing to FanGraphs and Baseball Prospectus as well.

Luke Weaver has replaced Holmes as the Yankees’ closer, which strongly suggests the Yankees will pick up his $2.5 million option, so we won’t include him on this list. Despite having issues with failed saves, Holmes has an absolutely electrifying arsenal:

Holmes has the classic Supinator arsenal: a fantastic sinker and sweeper as well as a gyro slider. This video from Tyler Zombro of Tread Athletics does a great job breaking down pronation bias versus supination bias:

All three of Holmes’ pitches are plus pitches or better. Let’s take a look at how StuffPro looks at the arsenal, with negative numbers representing run prevention per 100 pitches:

Year Sinkers Slider sweeper
2022 -1.1 -1.4 -2.2
2023 -1.1 -1.8 -3.1
2024 -0.9 -1.3 -3.2
Clay Holmes’ StuffPro breakdown

That’s three pitches that all prevent runs at least one run per 100 pitches better than average, and a sweeper that is one of the best pitches in baseball. The sinker receives a lot of seam-shifted wake depth and sinks about 8 to 9 inches more than the axis of rotation would indicate, resulting in a negative launch angle of six degrees in 2023 and a negative launch angle of four degrees this year. His sinker has a mirrored axis of rotation to both the sweeper and gyro slider, which likely contributes to pitch deception. Stuff+ doesn’t break out the slider and sweeper, but has given them combined grades of 142, 141, 159 and 234 this season.

Given his ability to utilize seam effects, I think he could have a killer substitution if he wants to add another weapon to his arsenal. However, his arsenal is so good that he doesn’t really need it, especially if he stays in the bullpen. Even though he tops this list as a relief pitcher, I think he’s a fantastic candidate to replace Garrett Crochet next year.

Holmes has a starter’s frame of 6-foot-5, 245 pounds and has been a starter throughout his minor league career, including as recently as 2018. His weight-heavy approach would allow him to move through lineups efficiently. If he adds a changeup, he could have more than four throws, more than enough to get through lineups multiple times. Since Weaver has moved up to closer with the Yankees, it wouldn’t surprise me if they found a way to keep Holmes and turn him into a starter.

Scott is very easy to explain as he has a great FF/SL combination:

His fastball averages 97 mph, which is about 2.5 inches more ride than expected given his release characteristics. He receives a lot of criticism on the field, although his zone rate of 53.6% is still below what you would like. His slider maintains a ton of depth and is a perfect complement to the fastball. His command has improved just enough in 2023, and it looks like he’ll dominate hitters with electric means for years to come.

Hoffman is an elite, high-leverage bullpen arm, although he doesn’t have the “proven closer” tag that some teams covet.

His stuff isn’t quite as electric as Scott’s, but his fastball has great velocity and shape. He tends to throw the ball up the middle frequently, even when off-field batters don’t hit home runs:

His gyro slider features death ball movement, achieves negative vert and a massive 22% swing hit rate (per pitch). His shard also produces a lot of scent, even though he doesn’t throw it very often. Hoffman has the skills and experience to finish games wherever he signs.

Over the last two seasons, Chapman has thrown 120 innings and struck out over 200 batters. With a K% rate of almost 40%, he was already showing off his still elite stuff in the second half of his 30s. His command comes and goes, and he hasn’t posted an ERA below 3.00 in five years, but he’s an elite strikeout artist and it looks like he’ll stay that way as long as he pitches.

Jansen is no longer the pitcher he once was, but he is still a reliable “proven closer” who has returned to his roots and increased his cutter usage to nearly 85% this season. According to FanGraphs, he has been at least 0.83 runs per 100 pitches better than average in every season of his career except 2019. The lower use of his sinker and slider helped them emerge as surprise pitches. He only hurls the pitch at a speed of 92 miles per hour, but it has been moving at that speed for nearly a decade, so there’s no reason to think that won’t be the case for much longer.

Treinen is finally healthy, although he’s not quite back to his former self yet, having lost a few ticks on his sinker. However, he is the Dodgers’ closer in the playoffs, which should tell you everything about how much they trust him. Despite the reduced velocity, Treinen still posted an ERA under two and has posted a 2.29 ERA over 150 innings over the course of his injury-plagued Dodgers career. It can take pitchers a long time to recover from shoulder injuries, and it looks like Treinen is finally getting back to his old self.

Estevez has a great fastball that hits 96-97 mph and travels more than two inches above expectations based on his release characteristics. My SMOKE score is about 0.75 runs/100 pitches above average and Stuff+ is 109, but StuffPro is more skeptical and sees only 0.2 runs above average.

He does a lot of changes, but it has terrible theoretical form with no drop and fade and performs very poorly from a technical point of view. However, the pitch gets a touch and isn’t hammered, so it’s possible the unusual shape works for him and he sells it well. The slider is a great pitch but includes all metrics. Estevez is a very good pitcher who has proven he can finish games.

Sewald had a poor season, but the data strongly suggests that this was due to reduced sampling noise rather than a massive drop in performance. While the Stuff models saw a decline in fastball quality, largely due to the loss of a tick to Velo, it was still rated as an excellent pitch: 119 Stuff+ (down from 134 last year) and -1, 1 StuffPro (versus -1.7 last year). Year). According to my linear SMOKE metric, it runs better than average at just 0.2, but it might be difficult to fully capture Sewald’s outlier features. He combines it with a great slider and mixes in a surprising variety every now and then.

Teams that value material models will likely have Sewald as their main target this offseason, especially after a down year in which he may come at a discount.

Stuff+ has always been a big fan of Loaisiga:

StuffPro is also a big fan (negative numbers are good, positive numbers are bad):

SEASON FASTBALL SINKER SWEEPER CHANGE
2020 -0.5 -0.9 -1.6
2021 -0.8 -1.8 -1.7 -0.8
2022 -0.3 -1.1 -1.4 -1.2
2023 -1.3 -2.3 -1.8 -0.8

It is extremely rare for a pitcher to have such a good sinker and four-seam fastball. He combines that with a plus-plus sweeper and a good changeup. That’s three plus-plus pitches and a fourth average pitch out of the bullpen. From a pure perspective, Loaisiga is clearly at the top of this list, and it’s not particularly close. Despite elite raw materials and above-average leadership, he has never quite produced the results that the metrics strongly suggest.

After undergoing UCL surgery in April, Loaisiga could finally be healthy again by mid-season. As one of the younger pitchers on this list with absolutely electric raw material, he appears to be a key target for teams looking toward the postseason and/or building the back of their bullpen for the next few years. If it all comes together, there won’t be many bullpen arms better than Loaisiga.

Garcia has an electric arsenal:

Stuff models love his fastball, which is easy to see given his plus-plus-velo and plus-plus ride characteristics given his release characteristics. For some reason he gives up a lot of home runs and isn’t quite as dominant as his raw stuff would suggest. I don’t really have a good explanation as to why he doesn’t perform like a ’70s closer given his raw qualities. So it wouldn’t surprise me if he had a great season as a closer somewhere, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was just pretty good.

The best of the rest

AJ Minter has been a very reliable bullpen arm for most of his career, but is recovering from a hip injury that puts his health in question. Aaron Bummer has an elite sweeper, a terrible four-seam, and a decent sinker, making him a pull-heavy pitcher who performs much better against lefties than righties. He’s not a true specialist, but he needs an increase in sinker quality to be more than just a useful bullpen arm.

Kirby Yates and David Robertson are both in their late 30s but continue to chug along and produce. They’re probably boring pickups that smart teams build to bolster their bullpens. Kendall Graveman rounds out this list as an electric arm who may need some time to recover after shoulder surgery.

Despite all the international intrigue and espionage activity in the background, this morning was a powerful reminder that at the center of this public inquiry is a local woman who was clearly deeply loved and who had nothing to do with the previous events.

It’s hard to imagine what it must be like for a mother to make such a statement before a public inquiry.

The Chairman, Lord Hughes, seemed visibly moved by what he heard and clearly recognized that others were too, and so announced a break of a few minutes to allow people to collect their thoughts.

For all the powerful tributes, Caroline Sturgess also had an important message here, which the family’s legal team alluded to yesterday: Contrary to some press reports and assumptions at the start of the investigation at the time, Dawn was not a drug user.

It was obviously very distressing for the family that she was ever portrayed as such.

Part of the statement was read on behalf of Dawn’s daughter, who is still of school age and therefore not named. We learned that she almost saw her mother the day she got sick. If Dawn had sprayed the perfume at a slightly different time, her daughter might have gotten sick too.

She never got to say goodbye to her mother.
