India TV conducted an investigation

Since the video went viral on social media, we decided to investigate this claim. We conducted a Google Open Search using relevant keywords but found no news reports confirming that India has been granted such status. We then looked at the official social media accounts of the United Nations and the Indian government but found no posts about it.

Additionally, when we searched for “UN veto power” on Google, we saw a “voting system” section on the official United Nations website. The “Veto Power” section clearly states that only the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – have veto power.

In particular, the United Nations Security Council consists of 15 members – five permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) and ten non-permanent members. The non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two years without the right of veto.

What did the fact check reveal?

The fact check conducted by India TV confirmed that India was not granted permanent membership in the UN Security Council with veto power. Currently, only the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – have exclusive “veto power”.
