Andrew Garfield enchants San Sebastian as “We Live in Time” closes the festival

Andrew Garfield walked the red carpet in San Sebastian on Saturday evening with his latest film. We live in timeconcluded the film festival on the Spanish coast.

The British actor was not accompanied by his co-star Florence Pugh, but had director John Crowley at his side. We live in timewhich screened out of competition, is a south London romantic drama about an aspiring chef and a recent divorcee who fall in love. As they stroll through life – and even welcome a child – they learn to cherish their time together when a late-stage cancer diagnosis shatters the happy home they’ve built.

Garfield sat down with me The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday to announce his return to films after a two-year hiatus. “I feel looser, I feel less valuable. I feel happier. I feel more conscious. I feel established as a person in the world, an actor within myself and in the world,” he said. “I know myself well enough now to feel more joy.”

The 41-year-old also spoke about his bond with co-star Pugh on We live in time and the intimacy needed to act alongside one another: “With a script like this, we have to travel to the most intimate places,” he said. “At some point I have to have my head right on her ass while she’s standing naked on all fours in a gas station. This is scary for anyone, let alone the woman in this scenario.”

San Sebastian had its most dazzling celebration in years as Cate Blanchett, Javier Bardem and Johnny Depp took to the carpet outside the Kursaal Theater. Performances by Edward Bergers conclaveFrancis Ford Coppola Megalopolis and Sean Bakers Anora also attracted the industry’s biggest stars to Spain.

Among some panels at the festival, Killer Films’ Christine Vachon, a longtime collaborator of Todd Haynes who was set to produce the director’s project with Joaquin Phoenix before the actor dropped out early in filming, told “the truth” about the situation and described what in her opinion is the most tragic part.

“The idea that his time was wasted and that a film is not the result of those years of close collaboration with Joaquin is, for me, a tragedy that I cannot get over,” Vachon said Tuesday. “As a cultural community, we missed the opportunity to see another Todd Haynes film. This is just criminal.”

Depp’s premiere of his new film Modi – Three days on the wing of madnessAfter spending a few days in the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, the star compared his bumpy life to Modigliani’s and referenced his public defamation trial following his split from Amber Heard. “Every [character] has her story because we can safely say that I’ve been through a lot of things here and there. … Maybe your show hasn’t become a soap opera. I mean, literally televised,” he said, sparking laughter from the packed room of reporters.

Earlier this week, Bardem took the opportunity at his press conference before accepting his Donostia Prize for acting achievements to denounce the actions of the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu, which continued to carry out airstrikes in Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 .

“I welcome it [the award] with great joy, but I don’t feel like celebrating,” said a translation of Bardem’s statement in the Spanish press. “What happened in Gaza is unacceptable and dehumanizing.”
