Anthony Gordon has revealed he is close to signing a new contract with Newcastle United. The striker has been heavily linked with a return to Liverpool, having played for the Reds’ youth team before being released at the age of 11.

Gordon subsequently played for Merseyside rivals Everton before completing a big-money move to the North East in January 2023. His performances for Eddie Howe’s team led to him being called up to the England squad, where he featured for Gareth Southgate’s team at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.

The 23-year-old was set to move to Anfield this summer after Liverpool agreed a £75million deal for the winger in June. Joe Gomez would have moved in the other direction with a separate £45m transfer, but both deals fell through after the Magpies raised money through other means to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

And Gordon now appears ready to extend his stay at Newcastle with ‘AG’ written across the stands at St James’ Park [Anthony Gordon] 10′, ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s showdown against Manchester City. This move is a (potential) indication that the club could soon announce his contract extension.
