Everton has reached an agreement with Texas-based Friedkin Group to buy the Premier League club

Everton’s long-running takeover saga could soon be over after the struggling Premier League team reached an agreement with Texas-based Friedkin Group to buy the club on Monday.

“We look forward to bringing stability to the club and sharing our vision for its future,” the group said in a statement issued jointly with Everton, which sits 19th in the 20-team English top flight.

Led by Dan Friedkin and his son Ryan, the group is a consortium of automotive, entertainment, hospitality and sports investments whose portfolio also includes Italian football club Roma. The Friedkins made a fortune selling Toyotas in Texas.

The group agreed in principle to buy the 94 percent stake from Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri in June, but talks broke down a month later. Everton have since been in negotiations with American businessman John Textor, who said earlier this month he had an exclusivity agreement with the club that was due to expire on November 30.

Earlier this year, a planned takeover by 777 Partners fell through as Everton – nine-time English champions and ubiquitous in the top flight since 1954 – and Moshiri struggled to find a buyer or significant outside investment.

Now Everton and the Friedkin Group said they had reached an agreement “on the terms of sale” of Moshiri’s shareholding, adding that the deal is subject to approval from English football authorities.

“We are delighted to have agreed to become guardians of this legendary football club,” the group said.

Textor’s attempts to buy Everton have been complicated by the fact that he is also a part-owner of fellow Premier League club Crystal Palace. It is illegal to have a stake in two Premier League clubs at the same time, so Textor is trying to sell its shares.

However, Everton have been losing money every month and need to find a buyer quickly, especially with the team leaving their long-term home, Goodison Park, at the end of this season and moving to a new, state-of-the-art stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which is about to open is nearing completion.

The BBC reported on Monday that the Friedkin Group is already acting as a lender to the club following a capital injection of 200 million pounds ($265 million) and that this could be converted into equity under a deal. It was reported that the company could demand the money back if a takeover attempt failed.

The Friedkins have never commented publicly in the four years since buying Roma and are currently unpopular with fans after last week sacking Daniele De Rossi, the club’s popular former captain, as coach and not explaining exactly why.

Everton is one of England’s most traditional clubs, but has not won a major trophy since 1995 and has struggled against relegation to the second-tier championship in recent years, only managing to survive on the final matchday of the season in the 2022/23 season.
