No. 7 Miami trailed 24-17 at halftime against Virginia Tech at Hard Rock Stadium as the Hurricanes delivered their weakest performance of the season so far. Miami turned the ball over on its first offensive possession and had a chance to extend the game to a double-digit lead late in the first quarter before Cam Ward threw a costly interception deep in Hokies territory.

Three plays after Miami’s second turnover, Virginia Tech running back Bhayshul Tuten scored on a 55-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Jaylin Lane then gave the Hokies the lead with a 20-yard touchdown run with 5:25 left before halftime. Miami was outscored 17-3 and 167-29 by Virginia Tech in the second quarter.

Virginia Tech is seeking its first road win against a top-10 opponent since defeating eventual national champion Ohio State in 2014. Miami, meanwhile, has lost its last three ACC openers.
