Early voter turnout in Deep East Texas isn’t far behind the 2020 general election

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – Although the third day of early voting is over, it’s just the beginning. Early voting lasts until November 1st and Election Day is November 5th. In Deep East Texas, Nacogdoches County and Angelina County, voter turnout is near normal.

“Here in the courthouse it is exactly the same as those six plus the 2020 courthouse. So the numbers are exactly where they should be,” said Vicki Wood, the election administrator for Nacogdoches County.

Last year, there were six early voting locations in Nacogdoches County, and the early voting period was extended by nearly three weeks.

Compared to the first two days of the 2020 general election, Nacogdoches County saw a decrease of 961 voters, while Angelina County saw an increase of 1,277 voters, according to early voter turnout results on the Secretary of State’s website.

“There are definitely more people in the presidential campaign. I think more people think that their vote counts and that it’s more important during the presidential campaign, when in fact it’s important in every election,” Wood said.

Historically, voter turnout has always been higher in presidential elections, with 2020 being one of the highest.

“People are excited and want to vote. We’re also seeing a lot more younger people in this election,” Wood said.

Wood said elections in Nacogdoches County have gone smoothly so far. They have managed to keep waiting times short. She wants to remind people of the cell phone ban rule. No recording devices, including cell phones, may be located within 100 feet of the voting area. She just asks people to turn her off when they bring her in.
