Talk about massive stakes. From today’s perspective, this could well be an elimination game in the College Football Playoff. There’s a good chance these two will meet again in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game, but it’s hard to imagine a Group of Five team making the field with two losses in either direction – especially with players like Army and Navy make the race strong close. Boise State obviously has a Heisman Trophy front-runner in Ashton Jeanty, but UNLV should definitely not be overlooked. New quarterback Hajj Malik-Williams, who took over after Matthew Sluka’s public NIL controversy resulted in him needing a redshirt year, was a revelation for the Rebels. They also have two of the best defenders in the country in linebacker Jackson Woodard and defensive back Jalen Catalon. This is a heavyweight bout and one of the most important matches of Week 9.

Buffalo, Ohio

Date: Saturday, Oct. 26 | Time: Midday. AND

Spread: Ohio -6.5 | Will the Bobcats cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

The race for the MAC Championship Game is extremely tight right now. Buffalo and Ohio are two of six teams that currently have a 2-1 record in conference play, so it is imperative for both teams to win Saturday afternoon’s contest. Buffalo’s offense doesn’t perform well compared to its conference counterparts, but the Bulls have put up a lot of points over the last month. They average 31.3 points per game against MAC opponents, but they will have their hands full against Ohio. The Bobcats currently rank second in the MAC in total defense (331.3 yards per game) and fifth in scoring defense (24.3 points per game).

Spread: UConn -6.5 | Will the Huskies cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

UConn is for real this year, at least by UConn standards. The Huskies came just three points shy of a major upset against Wake Forest in Week 8, losing 23-20 at home. Still, they are just two wins away from bowl eligibility for the second time in three years under coach Jim Mora. It certainly won’t be an easy farewell to the American Athletic Conference for Rice. The Owls are just 2-5, but one of those wins was an impressive triumph against UTSA. They had no problems slowing down opposing offenses, but their own offense couldn’t keep up. Rice is currently ranked 10th in the AAC, averaging just 23.3 points per game.

Spread: Wyoming -2.5 | Will the Cowboys cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

Not much happened for either team. Both teams are trying to stay afloat and stay out of the bowl conversation for at least another week. With an overall record of 2-12, neither team is really thinking about the postseason at the moment. Everyone fought in their own way. Wyoming’s offense is averaging a meager 279.6 yards and 17.1 points per game. The Cowboys have scored more than 30 points only once this season. Utah State’s offense wasn’t quite as ineffective, but the Aggies can’t keep their opponents off the field or out of the end zone. Utah State ranks dead last in the Mountain West in total defense, but allows 502 yards per game – which is also second-worst in the FBS – and scores a whopping 43.9 points per game on defense.

Washington State at San Diego State

Spread: Washington State -14.5 | Will the Cougars cover? Check out SportsLine’s Week 9 predictions here

Washington State has quietly had a phenomenal season. If the Cougars counted for the Mountain West Conference rankings, they would be a contender. Their only loss this year is to a really good Boise State team. Otherwise, they beat the likes of Washington en route to a 6-1 start. San Diego State made a splash by signing former Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis, but the Aztecs struggled to put points on the board. They have rattled off two straight wins by a score of 27-24, the highest point total against FBS opponents this season, but previously they had not scored more than 21 points in a non-FCS game.
