Chelsea will be aiming for two wins from two games in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday when they face winless Panathinaikos in Greece. The Blues are one of several teams to have won their opening game of the competition and have a strong chance of finishing second, although coach Enzo Maresca will work with a rotated squad in the league phase. Cole Palmer has been left out of the Conference League squad to manage his minutes, although a handful of their best players could feature in Europe this week.

Here’s what you need to know before you tune in.

How to watch and ratings

  • Date: Thursday, Oct. 24 | Time: 12:45 p.m. ET
  • Location: Athens Olympic Stadium – Marousi, Greece
  • Regard: Paramount+
  • Opportunities: Panathinaikos +490; Draw +320; Chelsea -180

Storylines

Despite Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, there is plenty to be hopeful about at Chelsea as Enzo Maresca is adapting well to his new job. They have won four of their first eight Premier League games, leaving them just shy of a place in the top four and sitting second in the league’s top scorers list. Although Cole Palmer’s six goals play a big part in the Premier League tally, he is not the only one enjoying a strong start to the season.

Maresca is likely to rotate his team on Thursday and expects strong results with a performance that could mirror their 4-2 win on matchday one against Gent. Chelsea had four different goalscorers – Renato Veiga, Pedro Neto, Christopher Nkunku and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – during a dominant performance and although they were shaky defensively, this game will likely be the template for Thursday’s trip to Panathinaikos.

Planned lineup

Chelsea: Jorgensen, Disasi, Adarabioyo, Badiashile, Veiga, Casadei, Dewsbury-Hall, Neto, Felix, Mudryk, Nkunku

forecast

Maresca will be right to bet that a rotated squad can get the job done on Thursday. So expect a comfortable win for Chelsea as they start to stand out from the competition in the Conference League. Choose: Panathinaikos 1, Chelsea 4
