Arrest as part of Jaquavius ​​Weston murder investigation

Birmingham police report that investigators have obtained an arrest warrant in connection with the murder of Jaquavius ​​James Weston. He was shot Wednesday, May 15, 2024in the 2400 block of Avenue W.

The suspect was identified as:

Cameron Jayveon Scales, (18), B/M, of Bessemer, Alabama.

Birmingham police detectives provided information about the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After reviewing the information, investigators obtained an arrest warrant Murder.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Cameron Scales was taken into custody in the 1000 block of Huckleberry Lane, Hoover, AL. by the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Enforcement Division with assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Cameron Scales is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail No bond.

Murder investigation

Birmingham Police are conducting a murder investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

The victim was identified as:

Jaquavius ​​James Weston, (18), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to two separate ShotSpotter alerts. One report reported approximately eighteen shots fired and the other reported six additional shots fired in the 2400 block of Avenue W, Ensley Highlands Township.

When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered two residents who said they had just arrived home and had not heard or seen anything unusual. Officers checked the location and did not see anything unusual at this time.

At approximately 11:53 p.m., officers responded to the location for a “person shot” call.

When officers arrived at the scene, they observed the victim approximately fifteen feet down in a ditch, lying lifeless and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on scene and pronounced the victim dead.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was outside the residence and was involved in a verbal argument on the phone with an unknown person. An unknown vehicle
approached the victim and shots were fired, fatally wounding the victim.

There is no one in custody.
