The DCU’s first project has already broken a disappointing 19-year-old Batman trend

The DCU’s first project has already broken a disappointing 19-year-old Batman trend

In 2003, Christopher Nolan set out to deliver a new version of the Caped Crusader after it failed Batman and Robin put the franchise on hold for eight years. The result was Batman beginswhich strayed far from Joel Schumacher’s colorful vision and instead anchored the Dark Knight in reality. This meant that certain villains like Mr. Freeze or Killer Croc didn’t fit into Nolan’s realistic Gotham City, which focused on more realistic enemies like The Joker, Two-Face and Catwoman. Nolan would eventually make a trilogy in the same framework, which became a tremendous success and redefined the Batman franchise and comic book films as a whole. Nolan would also be involved in rebooting Superman with Zack Snyder Man of Steelwho also tried to ground the DC symbol. Man of Steel would eventually launch the DCEU and a new Batman who would exist in a more fantastical world than Nolan’s. However, its full potential was never realized as Ben Affleck’s version never received a solo film.

As the DCEU began to fall apart, Warner Bros. rebooted its popular DC character, this time under the helm of Matt Reeves. Like Nolan, Reeves also tried to ground Batman in reality, but focused heavily on the detective aspect of the character. Reeves’ The Batman was another successful reboot, and The penguin continued it. Nolan’s successful take on Batman influenced DC projects for over a decade and will likely continue depending on his notoriety. Nonetheless, fans have also been excited to see a return to Batman’s fantastical side, with the DCU initially set to reboot the character once again The brave and the courageous.
