Pennsboro Speedway reopens after 22 years

PENNSBORO, W.Va (WDTV) – Since the early 20th century, the legendary Pennsboro Speedway has served as hallowed ground for dirt track racing fans. When the venue closed in 2002, people were stunned. But now they are excited to reopen.

“I’m so excited I can hardly bear it, I was on this track back in ’80 and ’84. A lot of memories, a lot of good memories, I’m just thrilled to be back here today,” said Virginia Bland, Pennsboro Speedway fan.

Pennsboro residents fought for years to get their racetrack back. The man who finally got the job done was Berry Braun of XR Events. The recovery plan will take two years and Barry would like to thank the community for their support.

“These people had been lost for 22 years. We started working and they saw our effort here, but then the people of Pennsboro said, ‘What can we do to help?'” said Barry Braun, CEO of XR Events.

The track renovations were carried out in less than a month. The starting signal will be given this evening with a training race before a soft opening on Thursday.

“Pennsboro is back, this facility, this area is going to be revitalized, it’s going to be exciting and hopefully we’ll have a full stadium like we did in the ’80s and ’90s and racing will be back in a big way in West Virginia.”
