AAA Texas promotes safe Halloween celebrations

TEXAS (KAUZ) – AAA Texas has shared tips to encourage drivers and pedestrians to celebrate Halloween more safely.

AAA Texas offered the following tips for drivers on Halloween:

  • Avoid neighborhood shortcuts: Stay on main roads and avoid crossing residential streets where children might be trick-or-treating.
  • Pay attention to children: Children can be found running on streets and curbs, often wearing dark costumes. Watch out for children crossing in the middle of the block or between parked cars.
  • Slow: Driving 10 mph slower can mean the difference between life and death. A pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed at 35 mph than at 25 mph.
  • Drive sober: A third of traffic fatalities involve drivers who were impaired by alcohol. If you drink, always appoint a sober driver.

AAA Texas offered the following tips for parents and pedestrians:

  • Trick or treat together: Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Check the safety rules: Teach children to stay on sidewalks, use crosswalks and stop at driveways.
  • Choose visible costumes: Opt for bright, reflective costumes and attach reflective tape to help children be seen.
  • Check costumes: Make sure costumes do not obscure visibility or create a tripping hazard. Consider face paint instead of masks.
  • Carry a flashlight: Have a flashlight handy, but avoid shining it in the eyes of others, especially drivers.
  • Fasten your seat belt: If you go trick-or-treating, be sure to use seat belts and child seats properly.
