Champaign firefighters are installing free smoke alarms at local homes Friday

Firefighters and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department and Neighborhood Services Department, along with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, will go door-to-door in a north Champaign neighborhood on Friday, Oct. 25, offering smoke alarm checks and free smoke alarms in homes I need it to install.

This smoke alarm blitz, beginning at 1 p.m., will cover approximately 30 homes within the boundaries of Garwood St. to the south; Market St. to the east; the dead ends in the north; and Walnut St. to the west.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds everyone that smoke alarms save lives.

Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained go a long way toward reducing deaths and injuries from fires.

Smoke detectors should be tested once a month and replaced after 10 years. If the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay outside.
