Champaign firefighters are installing free smoke alarms at local homes Friday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WICS) – Firefighters and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department and Neighborhood Services Department, along with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, will go door-to-door in a north Champaign neighborhood on Friday, Oct. 25, offering smoke alarm checks and free smoke alarms in homes I need it to install.

This smoke alarm blitz, beginning at 1 p.m., will cover approximately 30 homes within the boundaries of Garwood St. to the south; Market St. to the east; the dead ends in the north; and Walnut St. to the west.

The Champaign Fire Department reminds everyone that smoke alarms save lives.

Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained go a long way toward reducing deaths and injuries from fires.

Smoke detectors should be tested once a month and replaced after 10 years. If the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay outside.
