What do you like best about autumn?

With cooler mornings and shorter days, fall finally seems to be here. What do you like best about autumn? That’s the question we asked people at our recent News and Brews community pop-up in Cullman.

My favorite thing about fall is eating seasonal foods. Since I have a German-American family, when it’s a good time of year, I like to pull out some canned root vegetables and make a really big pot of stew. Or my mother goes crazy and makes homemade schnitzel and homemade sauce. She will make spaetzle in the fall. So these are my favorite foods, the seasonal foods that are based on what was either canned and stored earlier in the year or what is just coming out, like butternut squash, root vegetables and rutabaga.

What I like best about fall is the weather. The heat goes down. The bugs are starting to go to bed. And you can go outside again.

The weather, the leaves, the colors, I love autumn. And usually football season, but I’m an Auburn fan. So not so much at the moment.

Something else about autumn, the Halloween films. Michael Myers. This is the best. Halloween 4 is the best.

Falling. I love it. It was very exciting to be here because we’ve been in Florida for so long and you really don’t fall there. So it was quite nice. We’re actually pretty high up on Smith Lake and have a screened in porch. It’s like we’re kidding because it’s like an aviary, but we’re the birds. And we sit on our little screened-in porch and listen to the birds, but no one is around. It’s great.

So let’s bring back the fall. It’s just nice to see and experience all the leaves turning. And summer is waning. My favorite part: nature. The leaves.

Ah, the lack of moisture. When the wind comes from the north and not the south. The color change, the taste changes completely here in Alabama. The plant world, the goldenrod, the trees, the changing of the leaves. I love everything about fall. It’s my favorite time of the year. Including the holidays – Halloween, Thanksgiving and then the final farewell leading to Christmas.
