Against all advice, I wore new shoes at Disney World – here’s what happened

We give a lot of advice on AllEars, and much of it is based on personal experience.

Yes, I made a lot of interesting (bad) Disney World decisions

The funny thing is, if I’m honest, sometimes we’re terrible at following our own advice. Personally, I know that I’ve forgotten my rain gear and ended up walking around soaking wet more times than I’d like to admit, that I wore the wrong shoes to Mickey’s not-so-scary Halloween party, and that my penultimate trip, folks, I made a decision that I KNEW could have gone wrong so quickly – I wore brand new shoes to the parks.

It takes time to put on brand new shoes, and that doesn’t change when you’re at Disney World. But instead of spending an hour or two running around in it running errands, You walk 10 miles through the parks and your feet are about to HATE you.

Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom

I say this, and from experience no one is surprised to hear it. HOWEVER, I found myself between a rock and a hard place. Let me set the scene: It’s the end of September and Hurricane Helene is heading towards the USA I don’t know how much rain there will be in Orlando, but I know there will be rain in my future.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

I’m usually a girl who wears socks and sneakers to the park because I hate open-toed shoes with a passion. Especially flip flops (sorry Myranda, I know you love them) – there’s just a feeling that my feet aren’t fully protected and all those straps are uncomfortable for me. But you know what I think would be even more uncomfortable? Soaked shoes and sneakers.

These sneakers are my favorite!

And if your sneakers get wet, it’s not an easy fix – you can change the socks, of course, but if your sneakers get wet, your new socks will get wet too, and then you’re back where you started. Wet socks and sneakers can also cause blisters VERY quickly, and as soon as you enter the air conditioning you suddenly feel cold, and I really didn’t want to deal with all of that. So I asked Emma for her personal opinion on open-toed shoes (since she’s the AllEars style queen) and She recommended Tevas to me! I ordered a pair from Amazon and they arrived the next day, about 24 hours before I left.

I tried carrying the Tevas around the house a little, just to try and damage them even a little, but I knew in advance that that wasn’t enough. I actually drove it to Disney World and then made the decision the next morning I would wear them to Animal Kingdom because I knew rain was on the radar that morning.

As you can see from the rain on my glasses, it actually rained

And wearing them to Animal Kingdom was the RIGHT CHOICE. When I left it was pouring rain and I had to slosh through about 3-4 inches of water that would have completely covered my sneakers and soaked them for the rest of the day. However, once I arrived at Disney Springs, the rain let up and the radar showed no further rain for the entire duration of filming. At this point my feet were hurting more than usual, but nothing serious, so I decided to switch to socks and sneakers.

It was a beautiful day at Disney Springs!

Fortunately, it was the right decision here too. My feet felt much more comfortable in the sneakers I’ve been wearing for years and there was no rain to soak them (It actually rained once, but we timed it really well and bowled during it!). Now I lucked out with this timeline and if rain had been on the radar during our stay at Disney Springs, I probably would have worn the Tevas.

I will say, however, that the following day, which, like most days at Disney World, involved a lot of walking, My feet weren’t very happy with me and I could feel the effects of wearing unbroken shoes practically all over my body when I ran a few miles (Contrary to the way I sound here, I promise I’m only 23 😂). Luckily I had Advil with me and that took care of most of it, but only just Remember that wearing the wrong shoes one day can and will affect your remaining days as well.

Did my feet hurt at this point? Thanks to Advil, no!

We’ll always bring you the latest tips and tricks that we’re trying to remember, so be sure to stay tuned to AllEars!
