Alex McPherson could return, Hugh Freeze is playing for a win

According to Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze, freshman kicker Towns McGough is currently in a “kicker crisis.” After an impressive start earlier this season, McGough has struggled in recent games and has missed four of his last seven tries.

Of course, McGough was never supposed to play and back up Alex McPherson this season. Due to serious gastrointestinal problems McPherson was out all seasonbut has slowly worked his way back up to being ready to play. Freeze told the media after this weekend’s loss that there was a chance he could return in the Kentucky match.

“If we had another opportunity inside the 35-yard range to give Alex that shot, he told me he felt like he could do it,” Freeze said last week in Missouri. per Auburn Undercover. “We’re close to thinking about it, we’ll see how the week goes. Again, we’re excited about Towns and his future and his talent, but we have to get it done. Those are crucial moments that keep our momentum going.” We feel good and feel like, “Man, we’re finding ways to win the game.” He felt like he could have participated if we were still in that situation on Saturday would have once had.

It was one of the most frustrating and disappointing seasons in recent history for the Auburn football program, and every weekend Hugh Freeze is forced to search for answers in his address to the media. Why can’t the team execute? Why do ball losses plague the offense? Why can’t the Tigers maintain their comfortable lead in the fourth quarter?

Freeze told the press on Monday that the players are starting to feel the pressure of a four-game losing streak and he fears the Tigers are playing not to lose rather than winning the game.

“We’ve got a young team, they’re learning and growing, but I think we’re still playing not to lose rather than saying, ‘Man, let’s play to win.’ Honestly, we probably coach some too in this way. I feel the pressure of these calls and the lack of freedom to do what I have done for years. And, “Oh man, we could screw this up.” couldn’t execute this correctly.’ “These are all feelings that are real and valid and probably lead to us not finishing the games really well,” Freeze said. per The Montgomery Advertiser. “There’s no question that you feel the pressure of those moments where you say, ‘Am I just going to be as free and loose as I’ve been for most of my life and coaching?’ or ‘Man, we’re so desperate, that our children deserve to win one of these games.” “Don’t do anything that puts them in danger of doing that.” “

The Tigers will have a chance to pick up their first conference win this weekend on the road against Kentucky.
