Review of the Beachside Hotel in Nantucket

When it comes to word association, Nantucket wins medals for instantly conjuring up images of hot, sunny days, summer flings, ice-cold sunset cocktails, and chic chic. All of this seems to have been on the mood board for the newly renovated beachside hotel on the island’s northern crescent coast.

New York-based design studio Parts and Labor Design – recently named to the Wallpaper* USA 400 list – has brilliantly reimagined a small collection of mid-century white cedar shingled buildings, embracing the 1950s design ethos at the same time be inspired by classic celluloid elements Clay court to create what the hotel describes as a “love letter to the American summer.”

It’s a wholly appropriate homage, particularly evident in the color palette of sea foam green, terracotta, cream, mosaics and warm brown wood that Parts and Labor has laid out across the original footprint of five surviving buildings spread over a sprawling 3, settle on a 5 hectare property.

Jeremy Levitt, co-founder of the studio, says the design concept “revolves around the history of textiles and crafts on Nantucket, and many of the materials and details we used represent that ethos.” Every part of the hotel, including the The lobby and each guest room open to the central indoor pool and lawn, he adds. “This encourages guests to slow down, hike and explore.”

And there’s plenty to explore, including the nearby landmark of Jetties Beach, but for the loafers, staying on property is worth it—whether you’re cozying up in the lobby, which has woven straw chairs, mosaic vases, and white velvet cubes at the same time serve as a stool or be put to the test in the playroom, which is decorated with abstract paintings and an installation of Rubik’s cubes.

And if you decide to stay near the pool and dine on a locally sourced menu while sipping chilled Aperol, who can blame you?
