Dominic Thiem experienced one of the most emotional evenings of his career when he said goodbye to tennis.

Thiem was praised by Jannik Sinner before his retirement after he decided to end his career after the Vienna Open.

And home favorite Thiem has now implemented this decision after losing to Luciano Darderi in the round of 32.

Darderi played the role of the villain at the Vienna Open, where Thiem thanked his supporters for his farewell event.

The former world number three was eliminated with a straight-sets defeat against the Italian, who won 7-6 (8-6) and 6-2.

But Thiem can hold his head very high after a stunning career that included 17 tour-level victories, including the 2020 US Open.

According to the ATP website, Thiem said after his last match on the court: “I have experienced so many beautiful farewells in the last few months, but today I would like to thank you for all the sensational years.”

“I’m just a part of this career. The whole trip was an absolute dream and I want this afternoon, this evening to be yours. I couldn’t have imagined it better. Thank you very much!”

The Vienna Open continues after Dominic Thiem’s ​​resignation

Thiem will now have enough time to say goodbye to tennis for good, as the Austrian deserves his fantastic farewell on home soil.

But the Vienna Open isn’t slowing down for anyone, with many top ATP stars aiming for glory at this crucial event.

The ATP 500 tournament will have a big say in the Race to Turin, with places up for grabs for the year-end event.
