UNLV police warn of circulating phone scams

UNLV police warn of phone scam.

Callers claim to be from the “university police” and may say that you or a family member has an outstanding warrant for your arrest or that you are having problems with the police and that you must send them money or you will be arrested, a statement says University Police press release.

Police warned that if you receive a call from “someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer saying you owe money, missed a court date or jury duty, etc., do not provide any personal information or pay anything over the phone.” Please hang up immediately and contact this department directly or use other methods to confirm the validity of the phone call.”

University Police can be contacted at 702-895-3668.

Check out the police press release for tips on what to do if you receive a call like this:

— Don’t give in to pressure to take immediate action.

— Do not engage in conversations as scammers may record your response.

— Do not give a caller your credit card number, bank account information, Social Security number or other personal information.

— Do not send money if a caller asks you to transfer money or pay with a prepaid debit card or transfer money to a Bitcoin account.

— Do not travel to a location where the caller may request you to go.
