A John Wick prequel film is in the works, and I'm excited to see what it has to offer with Keanu Reeves' character

Although development continues John Wick: Chapter 5The fact is that Chapter 4The ending provided a fairly definitive conclusion to the story, which focused on Keanu Reeves’ title character. However, that doesn’t mean we’re done with this world of colorful assassins, as is the case in films like Ana de Armas ballerina and the TV series Under the high table will flesh out this mythology. Additionally, there is a prequel film in the works that will put the old John back in the spotlight, and I’m excited to see the part of his life he’ll cover.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of the first John Wick film, Chad Stahelski, who co-directed with David Leitch in 2014 and single-handedly directed the following three films, sat down with THR to talk about the past, present and future of this property. This included mention of a “feature anime” about John Wick set before the events of the film, and when the interviewer asked if it would explore the “impossible task” John had to complete before taking up life as an assassin would marry his wife, the filmmaker replied:

Ish. You’re pretty much right, but it’s animated fun. It’s supposed to be fun. Some of the prequels and sequels you see in other franchises aren’t meant to be structured like this. We just want to have fun. We want to have fun with the Wick world, but we’ve already made it to one end [with John Wick: Chapter 4]so let’s go back and use a different medium.

While he’s not 100% willing to confirm that this anime prequel is about John Wick’s impossible task, it sounds like the project will at least touch on, if not fully explore, this important event in the character’s life. For those who need a refresher, in order to back away from being an assassin, John had to kill all of crime boss Viggo Tarasov’s enemies in a single night. He was only able to do this with the help of Santino D’Antonio, who only agreed to help John in exchange for a marker that he could use to call in a favor at a later date, which ultimately led to the events of John Wick: Chapter 2.

John Wick recorded an enormous number of people killed over the course of its four films, but given what little was said about the impossible task, the number of bodies dropped that night seems almost legendary. While part of me wishes this event was better left imagined, I’m intrigued by the prospect of it being explored on the big screen, particularly through animation rather than live action. In this way, the action sequences can be presented in a more colorful and unusual way, befitting the animated medium.

The John Wick The franchise was expanded beyond the main film series for the first time in 2023 with the limited series The Continentalwhich can be streamed with a Peacock subscription. Along with this anime prequel, ballerina And Under the high tableA spin-off film based on Donnie Yen’s “Caine” is in the works. Halle Berry has also expressed interest in taking over Sofia for her own spin-off, although that would have to happen soon. We will return to this world one day ballerina will appear in the 2025 cinema program on June 6th.
