Report: Warriors and Timberwolves talked about KAT trade before Knicks deal originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The Warriors aimed to add a combination of size and shooting prowess this offseason.

After recruiting NBA All-Stars Paul George and Lauri Markkanen this summer, reportedly with the original intention of signing both players, Golden State had its eye on another Western Conference big man.

Before the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks completed a stunning blockbuster deal earlier this month, the Warriors inquired about the availability of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported Tuesday, citing sources in his coverage of Golden State -General Manager Mike Dunleavy.

“Over the last few months, the Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves had a conversation about Karl Anthony-Towns, league sources said, but it went nowhere,” Slater wrote. “The Timberwolves were targeting a specific package from the New York Knicks that the Warriors didn’t have. There is no other obvious big name that will be available immediately when the regular season begins.”

Minnesota eventually traded Towns to New York for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, Keita Bates-Diop and a future first-round draft pick. The Charlotte Hornets, a third team involved in the trade, received Charlie Brown, DaQuan Jeffries, Duane Washington Jr., two future second-round picks, a 2025 second-round pick and cash.

While the Warriors failed to land George, Markkanen or Towns, they can at least take solace in the fact that two of the three left the Western Conference…right?
