MT closes ITA Texas Regionals with doubles finalists

WACO, Texas – After a six-day stretch of competition, Baylor men’s tennis concluded its hosting stint at the ITA Texas Regionals, with the Bears making it to the final day in doubles and the quarterfinals in trios singles.

Double pair Luc King And Imran Daniel Hazli took a 4-1 lead this week and lost in the final to No. 4 seeds Texas Timo Legout and Lucas Brown 6-3, 7-5. The pair, who had never played together before the regional championship, proved successful after beating the No. 57 duo of Arthus De La Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi of Rice 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals. 10:4 benefited to advance to the final. The pair was just one win away from a bid for the NCAA Individual Championships.

On the singles side Zsombor Velcz The Bears led the main field 5-1 and finished third in the 108-player field. During the week, No. 4 seed Velcz defeated two Longhorns, No. 124 Lucas Brown 6-3, 6-3 and No. 17 JC Roddick 6-1, 6-2. His win over the No. 17 player in the nation secured him third place.

“I really thought we got better here this week,” head coach said Michael Woodson said. “It was an excellent event. We had great weather. Everything went smoothly. Our staff did a really good job and put together a first-class event for our region. You can see that not only in our boys, but in everyone.” Participants, coaches, players, fans etc. that it was a super successful event, I thought it was great to be represented in the double finals and three boys in the quarterfinals to have really solid for the toughest region in the country.”

In the quarterfinals of the singles main round, Baylor had three Bears in the mix with Velcz, the No. 5 seed Devin Badenhorst And Marko Miladinović. Badenhorst was defeated in the quarterfinals by 29th-ranked Jonah Braswell, who finished as an individual finalist, before finishing 3-1 and earning a ranking victory. Miladinovic also took a 3-1 lead and secured a ranking victory before falling in the quarterfinals. Miladinovic is now 3-1 against ranked individual opponents in the fall season.

Oskar Brostrom Poulsen He fell in the round of 64 in singles in three sets, but didn’t let that stop him. Brostrom Poulsen had great success with four wins in a row and secured the consolation spot in the singles.

Double pair Louis Bowden And Quintan Van Wijk made it to the doubles quarterfinals before losing to Texas Legout and Brown.

“We see continued improvement from all of our guys and continue to challenge ourselves to reach the next level at all times,” Woodson continued. “We are very motivated by this event and are looking forward to the ITA Sectionals as well as a few other tournaments coming up here before we get to the NCAAs. It was definitely a positive event for Baylor and our tennis program and we look forward to what lies ahead!”
