I Spent $100 on Flattering Fall Clothes at Walmart – Here’s What I’d Buy Again

I Spent 0 on Flattering Fall Clothes at Walmart – Here’s What I’d Buy Again

When I was younger, I bought clothes almost anywhere – I wanted trendy items and I wanted them cheap. However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more demanding. Some might even call me a clothing snob! I swore off fast fashion a long time ago and have been known to spend $150 on a pair of jeans. It’s about quality and timelessness, I’m convinced of that myself. Instead of buying cheap pieces that I have to constantly replace, I save and treat myself to quality finds that I can wear for years to come.

But working as a shopping editor also has its temptations. While I’m not easily compelled to buy clothes outside of my favorite stores, the reviewers at Walmart are compelling! Every now and then I come across a shirt, jacket, or pair of shoes that people are raving about and I wonder if it’s really as good as they say. Clothes at Walmart? Could I do it?

I caved during Walmart’s big holiday sales event earlier this month. The already low prices were even lower. So how could I resist just trying out a few pieces? If everything were bad, I could easily return the items to the store near my house.

Before I bought anything, I had a set strategy for buying clothes at Walmart. It was simple: avoid third-party sellers and only buy items shipped and sold by Walmart. Luckily, that wasn’t hard because Walmart has a number of really good private label brands, including Scoop, Time & Tru, and Free Assembly. And that doesn’t even include the fashion lines Sofia Vergara and Jessica Simpson.

With a clear plan, I spent a Saturday morning shopping for clothes on the Walmart app. I started by just adding anything that looked cute to my cart. I ended up with over $300 worth of clothing and decided it was too expensive for the first purchase. So I narrowed my choices down to $136, completed my order, and hoped for the best. Below are my thoughts on all the clothes I bought at Walmart.

Walmart diving pants

Yes, I am one of those shopaholics who can’t resist buying things in multiple colors. I got these pants in black and olive green.

Even though these pants went viral on TikTok, I was convinced they would be returned as soon as I unpacked them. They don’t look like anything special when you hold them up. In fact, they look big and shapeless and I had a feeling I wouldn’t like them. But when I put them on, something magical happened – they made me look taller and slimmer! Plus, the material is soft and they hang beautifully. I was surprised at how much I liked them. While I initially ordered these pants in black and olive green, after trying them on I also decided on dark brown.

Walmart

Hundreds of shoppers give these pants five stars and many think the fabric is a good imitation of Lululemon’s popular scuba material. That seems a bit excessive to me — the Walmart option is pretty thin compared to my Lulu scuba hoodie — but given the $19 price tag, it’s completely reasonable. These pants are worth the money and have an incredible slimming and leg lengthening effect that I love. I’m only 5’10” tall, but I feel like I look much taller and slimmer when I wear these pants.

Double-breasted trench coat from Sofia Jeans

“Shocked” doesn’t even begin to describe my first impression of this Sofia Vergara trench coat. It’s that good.

This classic trench coat went on sale during Walmart’s Holiday Deals event earlier this month, so I couldn’t resist giving it a try. Shoppers who had already bought it gave it rave reviews, so I thought, what the heck? I’m happy to report, it’s incredible. The material looks much more expensive than it is and the fit is perfect. I’ll be wearing it all fall and into early winter.

Walmart

Unfortunately – but not surprisingly – this style is currently sold out at Walmart. However, if you’re looking for a well-fitting coat, I 100% vouch for the fit and quality of Sofia Vergara’s collection and would recommend you give this great faux fur-trimmed style a try for the cold season ahead.

Sleeveless satin midi tank dress with scoop neck and crew neck

Yes, I also bought this elegant satin dress in two colors – green and black.

Okay, this is the one part of my Walmart collection that I’m most obsessed with. The dress is incredible! It fits so well, the satin material isn’t cheap or thin at all and I know I can style it in many different ways. One note: the neckline is quite high. If you’re sensitive to things that restrict you in this area, consider ditching this style. Otherwise, I’m in love with it and hope Walmart makes it in other solid colors.

Perfect for holiday parties or date night, this versatile satin midi dress is a must-have. It comes in four colors up to size XXL and I’m not the only one who loves it. “I bought this on a whim and thought I would give it a try but may have to return it. I was wrong!” wrote one buyer in his review. “It’s beautiful, classic. It lays flat and doesn’t sit on any lumps or bumps. I can’t wait to pair it with a chunky sweater or a long blazer. It’s extremely versatile and for the price you can’t go wrong!” “

Jessica Simpson Phoebe maxi dress

The millennial in me is so proud to support Jessica Simpson. This dress looks really cute with sandals in summer or with boots in fall.

I admit, this floral print dress isn’t exactly my style. It’s a little more boho than I usually wear, but I wanted to see what it looked like in person. The verdict? It’s a winner! It hangs beautifully and is lined so it is not see-through. It’s the perfect piece if you want to feel pretty and feminine.

Walmart

One thing to keep in mind about Walmart clothing: it actually sells out! This dress is no longer available in the blue print I purchased, but there is still a stunning red floral version available. Trust me: grab it in your size while you can! You won’t regret it.

Time and Tru button-down corduroy jacket

I didn’t think I was an idiot – until I tried this surprising find from Walmart.

For me, shackets are so trendy, which is why I avoided buying them for so long. But when I spotted this $25 corduroy style in a gorgeous autumnal shade of orange, I gave in. What the fuck, right? Turns out I’m a total idiot. I wear this piece with t-shirts and jeans and love the look – so much so that I also ordered the olive green one.

Walmart

I have to say that this piece is getting mixed reviews from Walmart shoppers. Among the main complaints? It’s heavy and stiff. That’s exactly why I like it. I wanted something that felt like it would stand the test of time and this fits the bill.

One final note about my online shopping experience at Walmart: I spent enough to get free shipping and it was top notch! I placed my order on Saturday morning and already received one of my items on Sunday afternoon. And I’m not even a Walmart+ member! My order was shipped in multiple packages; Everything arrived within a week or so.

Having already had a successful fashion shopping trip at Walmart, I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve already returned to buy more. And I have a few other items in my shopping cart. Here’s what I have in mind for my next Walmart clothing order.

Walmart

J.Crew is one of my absolute favorite retailers and this cardigan gives me the feel of a J.Crew lady jacket but for a fraction of the price. It comes in six colors perfect for fall and is super versatile. Not only can this sweater be worn over dresses in the traditional cardigan style, but it can also be worn buttoned up with jeans and trousers.

“This is a well-made cardigan that is comfortable and easy to wear. It makes you look good without much effort,” wrote one five-star fan.

I, a New Yorker, want to dress like the pioneer? Who would believe it? But it’s true. I literally sneak around this dress every day hoping it comes back in stock in my size with the fuchsia floral print. If your size is in stock, grab it while you can.

“The colors are pretty and the dress is comfortable,” commented one happy shopper. What more could you want?

Here’s the review that convinced me I need this perfect satin maxi skirt in my life: “This skirt is so good. It looks so expensive and is high quality at a very affordable price. It fits true to size and can be worn elegantly or casually.”

Now you want it too, right? It’s under $20 and available in sizes S-XXXL – check it out!

Do I still need jeans? Probably not. Are these fan-favorite Walmart denim pants currently at the top of my wish list? You know it. People who have bought them say they are comfortable and stylish – some have even bought a second pair.

“These jeans are amazing!” one customer raved. “The denim is soft and has great stretch – good for those of us with bottoms. The waist sits directly below the belly button and does not pull the butt crack down when you sit down. Great quality and lots of compliments.”

Like most people, I have more black blazers than I know what to do with. But an olive green one? This seems like a worthwhile wardrobe investment if I want to mix things up. I like that this style is made from a soft, stretchy material so it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. The casual sleeves are also a plus to achieve the perfect casual, yet elegant and professional balance.

It’s also available in cream, grey, red, navy and of course black if you’re looking for a different shade.
