The best games of Minnesota high school football’s opening round playoffs take place on Tuesday

As the high school football sectional playoffs begin this week, Minnesota Star Tribune reporters David La Vaque and Jim Paulsen make predictions for Tuesday’s opening round of games.

Chaska Hawks (4-4) at Waconia Wildcats (4-4), 7 p.m

Jim says: Which Waconia team will appear? The one that averaged 35.5 points per game in its four wins, or the bunch that failed in two of its four losses? The Wildcats’ offense was on fire in their 35-21 win over Chaska during the regular season. Chaska was just as inconsistent, but the Hawks defense was a bit stingier. And do you know what wins games this time of year? Stop the other guys. The choice: Chaska 28, Waconia 14

David says: A classic case of “your record is who you are” applies to both inconsistent .500 teams. Whichever team can put together a winning streak will see another game on Saturday. I agree with Jim, Chaska’s defense is the safest bet. The choice: Chaska 21, Waconia 10

Fridley Tigers (3-5) at Minneapolis Camden (5-2), 6 p.m

Jim says: After a difficult 0-4 start, Fridley salvaged its season with three straight wins before losing to Minneapolis North in the final game of the regular season. Formerly known as Minneapolis Henry, Camden’s new nickname was a success that the players viewed with pride. On paper, there isn’t much between these two. I think the Patriots deserved a playoff win to keep the good feeling going. The choice: Camden 27, Fridley 22

David says: Let’s not talk about Camden “deserving” anything. In fact, Fridley has a chance after a 34-0 loss to Minneapolis North. With a win this week, the Tigers will have their second trip to the North Side. The choice: Fridley 28, Minneapolis Camden 21
