Preview: #6 Maine will open Hockey East play at RV Northeastern

ORONO, Maine – The sixth-ranked University of Maine men’s ice hockey team opens Hockey East play this weekend with a pair of games against Northeastern at Matthews Arena.

Puck drop between the Black Bears and the Receiver-Votes Huskies is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. both nights. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+, with an international stream available on Hockey East/Stretch Internet. The games can also be heard on 92.9 FM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

HISTORY OF THE SERIES against NORTH EASTERN

• Maine holds a 57-58-21 overall record in the all-time series with Northeastern … the Black Bears are 19-33-0 at Matthews Arena and 37-22-10 at Alfond Arena.
• The teams met three times during the 2023-24 season … the Huskies won 6-3 in Boston on Feb. 2 before splitting a series later in the month … Maine won 5-1 on the first night , before going down 4-0 the next night.
• The series’ first ever meeting took place on December 1, 1977 at what was then Boston Arena, where Northeastern won 7-4.
• The Black Bears haven’t won at Matthews since Feb. 25, 2012, going 0-14-2 in that time.
• Ten current Black Bears have at least one point against the Huskies, with Josh Nadeaus The 1-3-4 line shows the way.

OVER NORTHEAST

• The Huskies enter Friday night with an overall record of 1-2-0 after losing two games to defending National Champions and top-ranked Denver last weekend… Northeastern lost both games, 5-2.
• Northeastern has four players with four points each in Dylan Hryckowian (2-2-4), Jack Williams (2-2-4), Vinny Borgesi (1-3-4) and Cristophe Tellier (1-3-4). .. overall the Huskies had six different goal scorers and 11 different point collectors.
• Cameron Whitehead played every minute in goal and went 1-2-0 with a .894 save percentage and 3.34 goals against average.

THE BOBCAT REVIEW
• Maine earned 2-1, 6-5 victories over a #7/8 Quinnipiac team at Alfond Arena last weekend to secure its first top-10 win since defeating #4 Boston College in January 2020.
• The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead on Friday night Nolan Renwick And Charlie Russell and then held on for a 2-1 win.
• On Saturday, with six minutes to play, Maine turned a 4-1 lead early in the second period into a 5-4 Quinnipiac lead… Brandon Holts The goal with 28 seconds left in the third period sent the game into overtime, where David Breazeale shot home the winning goal.
• Twelve different Black Bears had a point in the series, while all eight goals were scored by a different player… Harrison Scott He had five assists – including the first assist on both game-winning goals and Holt’s shot on goal in overtime – and was named the Hockey East Player of the Week.
• Scott’s four assists marked the first four-assist game for a Black Bear since Mitchell Fossier in October 2019 at Quinnipiac.



AN ODE TO THE OPENER
• Maine opened the season with a 6-0 win over AIC on Oct. 5 at sold-out Alfond Arena.
Nolan Renwick had two goals and two assists Taylor Makar had two goals and one assist… Ross Mitton recorded three assists…a total of nine Black Bears had at least one point.
Albin Boija made 17 saves for his third career shutout.
• Renwick’s four points marked a career high, while his two goals marked his first multi-goal game of his career… Makar’s three points were a career best.
• It was Maine’s first sold-out home opener since the 2007-08 season.
