Prime Video's new action-comedy film has secured the top spot

Amazon Prime Video’s latest film is a comical crime caper about low-rent criminals… but is it worth watching?

“Brothers” was released in limited release in the US on October 10th before launching worldwide on Prime Video on Friday, October 17th. Since its release last week, “Brothers” has quickly secured the No. 1 spot. #1 on Prime Video’s Top 10 Movies list.

Considering it’s the second feature from director Max Barbakow, who helmed Prime Video’s acclaimed sci-fi romantic comedy Palm Springs, it’s not all that surprising that Brothers was successful. The problem is that many people who watched it weren’t exactly heaping praise on Barbakow’s new release. Curious? “Brothers” is a breezy, R-rated road trip comedy about, unsurprisingly, a pair of siblings.

On the one hand, we have Moke, a reformed criminal (Josh Brolin) who now lives an honest life with his wife Abby (Taylour Paige). On the other hand, we have Jady (Peter Dinklage), his “tried” twin brother, who returns to Moke’s life after securing an early release from prison and takes his brother on a cross-country road trip to try and get one last big score. There will be legal problems, shootings and drama that will put their relationship to the test. Can they reconcile before the mission destroys them?

In addition to Brolin, Dinklage and Paige, “Brothers” also stars Glenn Close, Jennifer Landon, Brendan Fraser and, in his final on-screen appearance, the late actor M. Emmet Walsh.

Should you stream “Brothers” on Prime Video?

The general consensus is: No, you should skip Brothers and find something else to stream on Prime Video. It doesn’t look good for the streamer if another flop takes the top spot; “Brothers” stole first place from “Killer Heat”. Also wasn’t exactly well received either.

At the time of writing, the film has a rather unimpressive 41% critic score on the review site Rotten Tomatoes. Even though this is only from a total of 17 reviews, the split definitely leans towards “lazy”. The audience rating isn’t much better either and is only 48% on the popcorn meter.

Variety’s Peter Debruge said “Brothers” “is similar to countless films that have come before – in this case, silly capers about rural crime, from “Raizing Arizona” to “Logan Lucky,” but also/especially the mid-2000s sitcom “My Name Is Earl.” “-but it lacks the original spin or the improvisational leads that could have distinguished it.”

In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, Justin Lowe was similarly disappointed, writing, “Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage play mismatched, strong-jawed siblings (in Dinklage’s case enhanced by a handlebar mustache) in Max Barbakow’s second feature, in which he trades in the subtler one.” .” comical nuances of “Palm Springs” for humorous humor with a disappointingly weakening effect.”

However, it’s not all bad: RogerEbert.com critic Matt Zoller Seitz gave “Brothers” a 3/4 star review, calling it “far from completely bad,” adding, “In fact, it’s a pretty good movie, Most of all, thank you.” Because of its concept and the formulaic way it gets to the heart of its major plot points, it has a lot more life to it than you’d expect because of its performances.”
