Review of the film “Uranus 2324”: LGBTQ stars FreenBecky in Thai science fiction girl’s love film

2/5 stars

The on-screen pairing of Freen Sarocha Chankimha and Rebecca Patricia Armstrong, collectively known as “FreenBecky” to their legions of adoring fans, is transitioning to the big screen Uranus 2324a sprawling science fiction romance that depicts the love affair between two young women across the endless expanses of space and time.

The film is the latest offering in Thailand’s booming GL or “Girls’ Love” genre of romantic fiction, which emphasizes same-sex female protagonists, while also laying claim to being Thailand’s first space film.

The structure is promising enough. Kath (Becky) and Lin (Freen) are in a relationship until the death of Kath’s father causes their family to move to America.

Pursuing her dream of becoming an astronaut, Lin is selected by NASA to join the International Space Station. Their mission coincides with Kath’s return to Thailand to compete in an Olympic freediving competition.

In space, a freak solar flare incident nearly destroys Lin’s ship. Somehow, the same anomaly simultaneously affects Kath deep underwater, sending her on a cosmic odyssey through parallel worlds in search of a timeline in which she and Lin can be reunited.
