How to Save Money When Beauty Students Offer Cuts and Other Salon Services | Call Kurtis

CBS13 and the Call Kurtis consumer investigations team are always looking for ways to help you save money. This includes getting haircuts at heavily discounted prices that are worth trimming.

All you need to do when sitting on the chair is be patient as it may take a little longer than usual. But the extra time is worth considering because it will save you a lot.

Hairdressing and cosmetology students finally have the opportunity to go from the classroom to the stage at their beauty schools, trading in mannequin heads to cut and style the hair of people who could become their clients. For these students, it’s not just a rite of passage, it’s a requirement. Each student must complete hundreds of hours of actual salon time before graduating.

It’s good exercise for them too.

For example, on the price list at Paul Mitchell The School at Campus on Madison Avenue in Citrus Heights, perms — which typically cost more than $200 — are available for just $35.

This is what Lincoln Elmer’s mother paid for the 12-year-old boy’s perm before tipping.

Young Lincoln entrusted salon service to a student at the Paul Mitchell Salon School location. He wasn’t too afraid that something would go wrong.

“It might upset me a little, but they are students and they are learning,” he said. “So it’s not a big problem.”

The school charges $15 for haircuts. For those who want a more experienced student, it costs $20. How about a simple color application to cover up, enhance gray or make a change? That’s also $35. Need a blow dry and style? It’s only $10.

“Even though it’s cheap, there’s no compromise on quality,” Lincoln said. “The quality is still there.”

On the day we visited school, student “Scorpio” admits that the perm he is using on Lincoln is only his second one ever.

“I’m actually more confident this time,” Scorpio explained. “I learned a lot from my mistakes.”

To ensure that nothing can go wrong, there is always an instructor nearby who can intervene if necessary.

“It not only helps you, it helps us too,” Scorpio said.

Victor Navarro was at school to get his beard trimmed by student Jaydon Gillespie.

For Navarro, he only paid $10 for a shave instead of the $30 he would have paid elsewhere.

“I don’t mind being a guinea pig,” he said. “It grows back. It grows back quickly.”
