The San Francisco Giants could “transform” the rotation by signing star Ace in free agency

The San Francisco Giants are hitting the reset button under new management after missing the playoffs for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.

Aside from the rocky 107-win 2021 season, the team simply hasn’t been competitive over the last decade after getting off to a golden start in the 2010s and winning three World Series titles in five years. The team’s leadership expressed dissatisfaction at the end of another disappointing season when president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was fired in favor of franchise legend Buster Posey. While a GM has yet to be hired to replace Pete Putila, Posey will certainly have a big say in any acquisitions the team makes this winter.

If the team wants to make a big effort to quickly fix its problems and get back to contention for titles, there are certainly some superstars who would like to receive nine-figure deals from the Giants. One such option could be the top pitcher in free agency this offseason: Baltimore Orioles superstar Corbin Burnes. Nick San Miguel of Around the Foghorn pointed out that Burnes is a California native and may have a desire to return home, and that if that happens, San Francisco should be willing to pay for it.

“Perhaps the Giants could be a promising landing spot for him if he is eager to return to the West after spending his entire big league career so far in the Midwest and East Coast,” San Miguel wrote. “Burnes will have a huge contract in free agency, but he would be worth it to the Giants given how consistent he has been over the last four seasons.”

Burnes has developed into a bona fide superstar over the last three seasons. Since winning the National League Cy Young Award with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021 with an 11-5 record and a 2.43 ERA, Burnes has been at the forefront of the conversation about the best pitchers in the world. After being traded to Baltimore in 2024, he had another spectacular season, posting a 15-9 record with a 2.92 ERA and 181 strikeouts in 194.1 innings over 32 starts.

As the Giants look for answers on how to fix things and become one of the premier franchises in the sport again, spending the money necessary to sign Burnes could be a good start.
