A local woman battling breast cancer for the second time is getting a helping hand

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The community is supporting a local woman battling breast cancer for the second time, as are 13 Action News and Yark Automotive Group.

In 2018, Lauren Salis was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 24. This year it came again and is now in the fourth stage.

“We tend to have a special bond, not just because she’s just an amazing girl, but because we’ve both suffered from this terrible disease,” said Shelley Welsh, Salis’ aunt and the force behind Team Lauren.

Welsh also happens to be a breast cancer survivor. She has held fundraisers in Rossford to help her niece pay for medication and raise awareness of early detection.

“It’s important to me to talk to people about monthly self-exams, teach your daughters how to do monthly self-exams and highlight the importance of it,” Welsh said.

13 Action News and Yark Automotive Group presented Team Lauren with a check for $1,300 to support her fight against cancer and raise awareness.

“I think this is not only amazing and unbelievable. I think it’s great that you’re helping her, but you’re also spreading awareness,” Welsh said. “A few years ago it was unheard of for a young girl to be diagnosed with this terrible disease and it is very important to me to raise awareness. Let these young ladies know that they are not safe because of their age.”
