Record turnout for first day of in-person primary in Shawnee Co.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Voters were beaming as they lined up at the Shawnee Co. election office early Monday morning to vote in person in advance ahead of the upcoming election.

Nearly 3,000 community members filed in and out of the election office, casting their votes and resulting in unprecedented voter turnout.

“The ballot is a pretty good size, it has about 40 to 50 ovals in it, so it takes a few minutes to fill out,” said Andrew Howell, Shawnee Co. elections commissioner. “We’re trying really hard to make sure people are processed quickly and efficiently and receive the correct ballot paper. We have set up about 60 voting booths here in the office. I’ve never experienced all the cabins being full at the same time.”

Voting on November 5th is not always an option available to everyone. Howell said expanded voting helps increase overall participation and allows voters more flexibility.

“Some people are really looking forward to not having to wonder where they’re going, where they’re going to park or what the weather’s going to be like on Election Day,” Howell said. “There are a number of reasons why I heard people say, ‘Hey, I just thought we’d come out and make it happen.’ “I know there are many people who still enjoy voting on Election Day. Historically, about 70% of Shawnee Co. votes on Election Day, so I don’t know if that’s a trend that will bring that number down a little bit this time, but I know at least from the interaction we’ve had with voters that They’re I really like their neighborhood locations, so we’ll see.”

Even if going into the office isn’t a viable option for you, Howell says they still want your voice to be heard.

“I encourage people to use the drop boxes to ensure they don’t have to wait for the postal system. Please consider using it here in the office or on the north side. You can drive through, we have people there to help you,” Howell said. “I hope people process their ballots quickly and efficiently and have a successful voting experience in Shawnee Co. this year.”

If you didn’t make it on Monday, the election office will be open for you to vote this week and next week from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
