Griffins expect Wallinder to lead the defensive game

The Grand Rapids Griffins have scored just seven goals in their first four games. Still, they got off to an impressive 3-1 start.

The key lies in the stingy goalkeeping and good defensive work of the Red Wings young talent, especially William Wallinder (32nd, 2020). With Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson now wearing Detroit uniforms, fellow Swede Wallinder has become a pillar of the Grand Rapids defense.

“He’s got a great bat,” Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson said. “Running extremely well. He is now learning the intensity it takes to compete at this high level every night. He’s working on that.”

Wallinder has a plus-2 plus-minus with one assist in four games. “Give him a lot of credit,” Watson said. “We asked him to log some tough minutes. Of course he is also responsible for the power play.”

The Red Wings certainly expected this rise, considering how his play improved late last season.

“It’s just developmental growth in his game,” Watson said. “He’s ready for it. We will make sure he is prepared and able to succeed.”

Meanwhile, Shai Buium, recovering from injury, had solid performances in his first two games for the Griffins. Grand Rapids won both games against Manitoba.

“He’s a smart player,” Watson said. “He moves pucks, sees the ice very well…Plays under pressure.” He has a winning pedigree. I’m from Denver. He knows what’s important. Good performance in his first two games.

Now the Griffins want their offense to be more productive. The forwards who have not yet scored a point include Red Wings prospects Nate Danielson, Cross Hanas, Elmer Soderblom and Jakub Rychlovsky.
