The mayor finds the revelation of confidential information worrying

Mayor Jeff Genung says the leak of confidential information purportedly from closed-door council meetings is a very concerning matter.

However, without providing further details, he is not sure whether the information leak came from people in the closed meetings.

The information was used in a series of attacks on Councilwoman Marni Fedeyko from an encrypted email account and led to her asking the public to share all emails she received. She has also filed a formal complaint with the RCMP.

RELATED STORY:

“It is a very worrying matter,” says Mayor Genung. “Yes, I am aware of that. We had a discussion internally. The administration worked through it. There is very little we can do as an organization. It’s more of an administrative matter and the CEO is looking into the matter.” “

He says the city can check through its IT department whether one of these emails was generated from a city email, but notes that doesn’t stop anyone from taking a screenshot or a piece of paper and posting it to share on your own device.

He says the city has taken strict measures to handle confidential and private documents during closed meetings. They are shared in a read-only format that cannot be copied or forwarded to others.

“They are locked in some kind of portal where only spectators can watch, so I don’t know what else we could do organizationally to prevent something like this. The allegations that they came from a closed meeting are not mine. “I have not seen any of the information or shared emails to really verify where they came from.”

“I think it’s unfair to say it comes from a certain number of people. But again, without all the information – this city council hasn’t given us any more information to really dig deeper into this – some of the information that…” I saw that these emails could be known to a larger number of people than what is simply shared on social media.”

He says they have been investigating Councilman Fedeyko for almost two years. Combined with the current information leaks, it was a complete “loss of energy,” he says.

“It was a big distraction, but I stayed focused on the work we do as a community. There are so many problems we face that require our attention. A security breach or information leak is concerning. We will do what we can to deal with it, but I remain focused on the work the council has ahead of it.”
