Trump visits Cabarrus County after remarks in Asheville

CONCORD, NC (WBTV) – Former President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will attend a campaign event in Concord Monday evening after a stop in Asheville.

Trump is scheduled to attend an event at the Concord Convention Center on Monday, October 21, after touring damage from Hurricane Helene in Asheville and holding a rally in Greenville, North Carolina. You can follow the event in the live stream on Monday from 6:30 p.m.

Trump was scheduled to meet with his son and Ben Carson at the convention center for an “11th hour meeting of faith leaders.”

Earlier in the day, Trump made a stop in Asheville to “see firsthand the devastation of Hurricane Helene” and speak to the press, officials said. While offering his condolences to the families and friends of those who lost beloved Helene, Trump said, “We have seen the incredible love that binds us together as Americans.”

Trump also thanked the first responders and other emergency workers who assisted North and South Carolina.

Helene caused deadly flooding in six states and so far North Carolina officials have confirmed 95 deaths directly related to Helene.

President Joe Biden toured the Tar Heel State on September 30, just four days after the storm reached the Carolinas.

Trump also claimed he visited North Carolina shortly after Helene landed.

He falsely claimed that the government was spending money on immigration because it could not provide aid to the region. He also criticized FEMA’s response and credited bringing Starlink to Western North Carolina.

Many parts of western North Carolina are still inaccessible, but roads are reopening daily, according to crews, and the number of power outages has fallen to fewer than 1,000, down from more than a million at the storm’s peak.

Michael Zhadanovsky, director of the North Carolina Democratic Coordinated Campaign Rapid Response, shared the following statement about Trump’s planned visit to Asheville:

“Trump continues to spread dangerous misinformation in the wake of Hurricane Helene, putting relief workers at risk and preventing the people of North Carolina from getting the help they need.” North Carolinians are ready to put the division and chaos behind them and “Elect Vice President Harris, who has made it clear that she is with us “for the long haul.”
