NFL News, Injury Updates: Jets’ Xavier Newman released from hospital, 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk fears ACL injury

The injury report from Sunday of Week 7 of the NFL season features some big names at the top and some potentially season-altering injuries for several teams across the league. The worst situation of the weekend occurred at the Jets vs. Steelers Sunday Night Football game, when New York guard Xavier Newman was carried off the field on a backboard and taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with a neck injury. Initial reports said Newman was fortunately conscious and moving his limbs when he was taken from Acrisure Stadium.

Other stars, including Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson, Washington’s Jayden Daniels and San Francisco’s Brandon Ayiuk, also had to leave their games early with injuries on Sunday. Here’s a look at some news and notes from Week 7.

The scary scene that unfolded at Acrisure Stadium was ultimately a precautionary measure. Jets guard Xavier Newman was evaluated after suffering a neck injury and tests returned a negative result for a serious injury. After the Jets’ 37:15 loss to the Steelers, he was able to return to New York with the team. Although the Jets confirmed the neck injury after the game, the extent of the injury is not yet known.

It’s another serious injury for the Browns’ quarterback, whose career has been marred by scandals, suspensions and long stints on injured reserve. Watson was carted off the field during Cleveland’s 21-14 loss to the Bengals after suffering a non-contact injury.

On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that an MRI confirmed that Watson has a torn Achilles tendon that will cost him at least the remainder of the 2024 season. In his three seasons in Cleveland, Watson has played just six games in each of the three years after signing a five-year, $230 million contract.

In another major blow to the 49ers’ offense, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk may have suffered a torn ACL in San Francisco’s 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s what coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game – a game that Jauan Jennings missed with a hip injury and in which Deebo Samuel played just three games after suffering an illness on Sunday. The 49ers’ offense has been decimated by injuries this season, with George Kittle missing one game and Christian McCaffrey not playing at all in 2024 because of Achilles tendonitis.

The leading candidate for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year left Washington’s 40-7 win over Carolina with a rib injury. While they didn’t miss anything in the comfortable win without him, any point in the injury report could be short-lived – if you can take his mother at her word. During the game, she posted on X “He’s fine” and Daniels finished the game warming up on the sidelines.

Mike Jones of The Athletic reports that it could be a few days before we hear anything about Daniels’ status for Sunday’s game against the Bears.

  • Mike Tomlin is pleased with the results of Russell Wilson’s decision

After the Steelers’ 37-15 win over the Jets on Sunday night, head coach Mike Tomlin sat at the podium and answered questions about one of his boldest decisions yet: starting veteran QB Russell Wilson instead of young Justin Fields.

Tomlin is perhaps the most professional coach in the entire NFL. He didn’t use the presser to soak up compliments, but rather to honestly evaluate his team’s play. But he allowed himself a moment of levity to end the matter when retired NFL wide receiver and Pittsburgh native Brandon Marshall stopped by to ask him a question.
