Anthony Edwards is considering a career change if he wins an NBA title

Anthony Edwards is one of the NBA’s brightest young stars, but he says he could soon leave the league. In his last interview, Ant said that he might consider another sport once he won a championship ring. Will that happen?

Anthony Edwards wants to play in the NFL after winning an NBA title

Edwards recently met with fellow Minnesota superstar Justin Jefferson, who plays for the Vikings. ESPN released an excerpt from the interview, and in the clip, Edwards goes back and forth about whether NBA players are better athletes than NFL players.

At the end he makes a bold statement about his future plans. Edwards said:

“Football players can’t play basketball. Absolutely not. I told my friends, “If I win a ring in the next three to four years, I’m going to play football.”

To which Jefferson replied, “No, you’re not.” Whether he wanted to win a championship or play in the NFL, we’ll have to wait and see. What do you think are the chances of Anthony Edwards winning the NBA title?

Will he do it?

It’s impossible to imagine a player of his stature switching sports. This has never happened before, at least not when you consider the two sports of basketball and football. While there is overlap between football and basketball players at lower levels, this has never happened before at the professional level. Two examples we can give are NFL legends like Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez. They both played college basketball before becoming football players. But they didn’t play in the NBA.

Another example is the other way around. Devin Funchess was a receiver for the Carolina Panthers who was selected in the second round of the 2015 draft. He dropped everything to play basketball in 2022 and made his overseas debut in 2023. The biggest star to change sports remains Michael Jordan. He retired in 1993 after winning his third NBA championship and tried to play minor league baseball for a year. MJ returned to basketball in 1995.

Can Minnesota win the title?

If we talk specifically about the odds, the Minnesota Timberwolves have the third-best odds in the Western Conference, behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets. This summer they traded Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo and selected Rob Dillingham. So far they have done their part to put together a good squad. Looking at DraftKings betting odds, they are +1000 to win the league title, +500 to win the conference, and +285 to win the division.

How good are the new Timberwolves?

The Timberwolves are coming off a trip to the Western Conference Finals and are clear title contenders this season. Minnesota had the league’s best defense last year and should remain the league’s leader this season. They combine this with a superstar offensive performance from Edwards and a deep bench with a variety of shot makers. While the Timberwolves are contenders, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks give them tough competition in the West. In any case, Anthony Edwards is only 23 years old. Most players reach their prime at age 26. Few stars have won a title before the age of 26. LeBron James was 27 when he won his first title, Michael Jordan was 28, Kevin Durant was 28 and Stephen Curry was 27.
