WATCH: Harris comforts ‘sandwich generation’ caregiver, says home health insurance is about dignity

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about how her administration could provide relief to overburdened family caregivers during a campaign stop Monday in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

The Democratic presidential candidate appeared alongside former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., at a town hall-style event and appealed to Republicans who had doubts about voting for former President Donald Trump.

Harris was answering a question from a woman named Alex, who said she has an elementary-aged son and a mother with dementia who requires full-time care. She asked Harris how she could close the gap between the “staggering” costs of child and elder care and the fact that many of those care workers are underpaid.

Harris expressed her condolences to the audience and other members of the “Sandwich Generation,” citing her experiences caring for her own mother, who died of colon cancer in 2009.

The Democratic nominee said that as president, she would change the rules so that Medicare would cover “your parents’ home health care costs.”
“You can then have someone support you who can help you prepare food and get dressed, and you can still give your baby all the love he or she deserves and keep your sanity while doing it,” she added . “And everyone can have dignity.”
