How long are the terms of the US House of Representatives and Senate? Here’s what’s on the ballot in the 2024 election

In addition to electing the president, Election Day also means voting for both chambers of Congress: the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. Congressional elections determine who represents your state in the federal government and which political party will have a majority in each chamber for the next two years.

How long are the terms of the House of Representatives?

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election in every midterm and presidential election year. The term of office for members of the U.S. House of Representatives is two years.

A representative must be at least 25 years old, have been a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and live in the state they represent. The number of representatives in a state depends on its population. Each representative serves a specific congressional district. Find your representative.

How long are Senate terms?

The term of office of the US Senate is six years. Unlike in the House of Representatives, these terms are staggered among the 100 senators. This year, 34 senators are up for re-election. Another 33 members are up for re-election in 2026, and the last group will run again in 2028.

A senator must be at least 30 years old, have been a U.S. citizen for at least nine years, and live in the state they represent. There are 100 U.S. Senators, two from each state. Find your senators.
