A linebacker became a part-time fullback in Week 7

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The Eagles got to 4 with a punishing ground attack that racked up 270 yards, of which Saquon Barkley added 176 yards, and a defense that tormented the Giants quarterbacks with eight sacks in a 28-3 win. 2.

The Eagles will be back on the road next week for the fifth time in seven games this season at the Cincinnati Bengals.

Before we go there, let’s analyze some of the snap counts from Sunday’s win over an NFC East rival, keeping in mind that the snap counts are somewhat misleading since the starters were removed after three quarters.

ATTACK

Ben VanSumeren. Okay, he’s a linebacker and a standout player, but the Eagles occasionally use him at fullback. And on Sunday there were five such occasions. He did a good job blocking both Saquon Barkley and Kenny Gainwell on long runs in his five snaps. He played fullback in high school and is doing well in the pros.

Tyler Steen. The backup offensive lineman for Mekhi Becton stepped in after Becton left with a concussion after just 15 snaps. Steen scored 51 points (77 percent) and the Eagles’ offense didn’t let up. If Becton can’t make it through the league’s concussion protocol this week, count on Steen getting more snaps in Cincy.

Tight ends. Without Dallas Goedert, the Eagles opted not to elevate a tight end like recently signed CJ Uzomah from the practice squad or EJ Jenkins, who only has one move left. That meant a heavy workload for Grant Calcaterra and Jack Stoll, who had 47 and 44 snaps, respectively. Their blocking on the run shouldn’t be overlooked, and Calcaterra caught one of Jalen Hurts’ 10 completions for five yards.

DEFENSE

Bryce Huff. He played his best game as an Eagle a week after he played his best game as an Eagle. Yes, it’s a trend. Huff is starting to get it, and if this continues, the bankruptcy discussion can be put on hold. He had 27 snaps and in those snaps he had one sack with five QB pressures on 18 pass rush attempts.

Jordan Davis. The defensive tackle’s snaps fell for the second straight week, from 21 last week against the Browns to just 12 this week. What is there?

Cooper DeJean. The rookie had another strong game a week after his first NFL start. He had 42 snaps (72 percent) and made four tackles and now has 10 total in his two starts.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kelee Ringo. The defensive back had 25 snaps (78 percent) on special teams and made two tackles as a put gunner.

Sydney Brown. The Eagles didn’t rush the safety back into action, even though he played 26 special teams snaps (82 percent) and had one tackle in his first appearance since last January. Brown also had nine defensive reps late in the game and managed a pass breakup to rookie receiver Malik Nabers.
