Viking Sports Weekly {21. October}

Women’s football

– The Vikings will conclude the 2024 season with a trip to Milwaukee this weekend and face the Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 26.
– In its last game, Cleveland State suffered two straight shutouts, defeating Youngstown State 1-0 on the road before earning a 4-0 victory over Oakland in the home finale.
-Elyse Broderick recorded her first two collegiate wins in goal, while Brooke Opferman scored two goals against Oakland and Mayra Sesmas scored the game-winning goal at YSU, raising her season tally to a team-high five goals.

Men’s football

-Cleveland State will play just one game this week, hosting Purdue Fort Wayne for Senior Night on Saturday, October 26th.
– Last week, the Vikings won the weekly #HLMSOC awards, with Matteo Correia (offense) and Ryan Poling (defense) taking the honors.
-In last weekend’s game in Milwaukee, Ryan Poling made a career-best nine saves in goal.

volleyball

-Cleveland State will hit the road this week, opening a five-game roadwing at RMU on Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25.
– Last time out, the Vikings split their series against Purdue Fort Wayne, including a 3-0 win on Alumnae Day with over 30 former Vikings in attendance.
– Coming into this weekend’s games, the Vikings are tied for fourth place in the #HLVB standings.

Cross country

– The Vikings will take the week off and return to action on Saturday, November 2nd at the Horizon League Championships.
– Last time, Cleveland State competed in the Falcon Invitational led by Natalie Keller (22:12) and Ana Crangle (22:31), both of whom posted top-30 finishes.
– In addition to Keller and Crangle, Ariana Coats (23:59) also achieved a personal best in the 6 km at the Falcon Invitational.

Swimming and diving

-Cleveland State will take a week off before traveling to Youngstown State on Saturday, November 2nd.
– Last time, the women hosted Eastern Michigan for their annual Pink Meet, where Isabella Caraballo (1000 Free), Grace Chelf (50 Free) and Giovanna Cappabianca (200 IM) claimed individual swimming victories.
-Brooke Eichel won the 1M with an NCAA Zone cut of 270.08 and placed second in the 3M.

Men’s golf

-Cleveland State will conclude its fall season this week at the Dayton Flyer Invitational and compete in the 54-hole tournament on Monday, Oct. 21 and Tuesday, Oct. 22.
-The Vikings will be one of 12 teams in the field, with the action taking place on the NCR South Course.

Women’s golf

– The Vikings will complete their fall campaign this week and compete in the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Monday, Oct. 21 and Tuesday, Oct. 22.
-The 54-hole tournament will take place on the NCR North Course, with the Vikings one of 10 teams in the field.

Women’s tennis

-Cleveland State has the week off from competition and returns to the Toledo Invitational on Friday, November 1st and Saturday, November 2nd.
– Last time, the Vikings hosted the annual Viking Invitational, where Sima Heren won the singles title and the duo Tereze Vevere and Ella Franz took home the doubles title.

Men’s tennis

-The Vikings will be back in action this weekend with the Viking Invitational, welcoming their teams to the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion from Friday, October 25th through Sunday, October 27th.
-This weekend’s tournament will feature a singles draw and a doubles draw involving seven teams.
– This will be the fifth tournament of the fall season for the Vikings, with Cleveland State most recently in action at the ITA Midwest Regional earlier this month.

Viking of the Week nominees
Elyse Broderick, women’s soccer

He recorded back-to-back shutouts against Youngstown State and Oakland and helped the Vikings to their first wins of the season with five saves this week.

Brooke Eichel, Women’s Swimming and Diving

Registered an NCAA Zone cut after winning the 1M against Eastern Michigan and finished second in the 3M event.

Sima Heren, women’s tennis
Goed 3-0 to win the Viking Invitational and won the individual title with wins over Duquesne, Bowling Green and Youngstown State.

Natalie Keller, Cross Country

Beat the Vikings with a 20 at the Falcon InvitationalTh With a 6km time of 22:12 he landed in fifth place on the top performance list.
