Tonight the New York Liberty won the 2024 WNBA Championship after defeating the Minnesota Lynx 67-62. The New York Liberty are an original franchise of the WNBA and this victory marks their first WNBA championship in 28 seasons and New York City’s first professional basketball championship since 1973.

Led by a 17-point performance from 2024 WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones, the Liberty secured their third win of the series and secured the title. The 2024 regular season was a record year for the New York Liberty. They secured first place in the WNBA playoffs for the second time in franchise history and went 32-8, the best franchise team in WNBA history with more than 30 consecutive season wins.

“After 28 years, we can finally say it: The New York Liberty are WNBA Champions,” said New York Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb. “This success belongs to our fans who never hesitated, to each and every Liberty legend who paved the way, to Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai who breathed new life into an organization in need, and to the entire city of New York who has since a week hungers for championship – and of course our players, whose courage, sacrifice and determination have made history. They are truly the first to do this in New York and I couldn’t be prouder of this entire organization.”

“This moment means everything – not just for the Liberty organization, but for our fans and all of New York City,” said New York Liberty CEO Keia Clarke. “The Liberty have been pursuing this dream since 1997 and after a five-year strategic turnaround driven by ownership’s vision to rebuild and grow this historic team, we are proud to get back to the top and win this championship for New York win.” We wouldn’t be here without our fans, whose passion has helped energize this team all season long. We are very proud of what we have built with our fans – something special that extends far beyond the basketball court – and this moment is as important to them as it is to us.”

The New York Liberty will host the 2024 championship celebrations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Further details will be announced on Monday, October 21st. Fans can register at www.liberty.wnba.com/2024Champions for more information as it becomes available.
