6 denim trends for fall 2024 that your favorite stars can’t wear anymore

No wardrobe is complete without an arsenal of chic yet comfortable jeans. I am firmly convinced of this. Coats, shoes and designer bags usually get all the glory, but denim is the unsung hero of such enviable street style. A quick look at the latest celebrity outfits proves my point: Stars from Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber to Zoë Kravitz and the Hadid sisters can’t resist pairing their red carpet dresses with casual-cool jeans in every wash and to spice up every cut. Even Taylor Swift returned to her Epoch tour I wore fall’s baggy denim trend last weekend.

After examining the last few months of A-listers’ street style and taking stock of the biggest blue jean moments on the fall 2024 runways, I’ve narrowed down the top denim trends celebrities can’t ditch this season. Ahead, discover 6 fall styles with Hollywood approval, from Katie Holmes’ favorite casual flares to Jennifer Lopez’s extra-wide-leg jeans.

Flared jeans

The flared jeans of my millennial youth are back and better than ever thanks to a few key differences. Today’s take on the trend features a higher rise and a far less exaggerated break at the knee than the mustachioed Hollister bell-bottoms I wore to my middle school dances. In September, Bella Hadid tucked her vintage Susamusa button-down shirt into dark wash buckle bunny flare pants from Frame to ride a horse through the streets of New York City. Days later, during her divorce proceedings, Jennifer Lopez paired a black turtleneck revenge crop top with extremely high-waisted indigo bell bottoms by Veronica Beard. Last but not least, Katie Holmes wore relaxed Banana Republic flared pants with black ballet flats and a beige coat earlier this month.

Wide leg jeans

In my opinion, wide leg jeans are basically a straight leg style without the taper. They differ from baggy and barrel styles in that they fit tighter at the hips before transitioning into a relaxed shape. Canadian tuxedo fanatic Katie Holmes wore Alice and Olivia-style pleated jeans with pink socks and black strappy heels, while Jennifer Lopez took a Victoria Beckham pair with patch front pockets for a spin in Paris. For one Emilia Perez For her press appearance in New York, Selena Gomez paired light-washed wide-leg pants from Banana Republic with a slim belt and a plunging black blouse.

Low-rise jeans

Low-rise jeans can be controversial, especially for those whose heyday was in the early 1900s. Luckily, the fall 2024 low-rise denim trend favors a longer, looser silhouette that won’t make you feel so naked. Dakota Johnson paired her low-waisted Agolde jeans with a classic black cardigan. Gigi Hadid left her long white shirt unbuttoned, exposing a bit of midriff over her Reformation jeans. And in horse girl fashion, Bella Hadid wore a black leather pair with a cowboy hat and a brown corset top for a rodeo show in the middle of New York City.

Baggy and barrel jeans

Baggy and barrel-leg jeans are a celebrity must-have right now. Hailey Bieber has been flawless in Agolde’s curved, wide-leg jeans several times before and after giving birth. However, in my humble opinion, EB Denim has cornered the barrel jean market with styles ranging from extremely exaggerated to subtly curved. Rihanna’s baggy, distressed denim reminds me a lot of her covetable Enzo mid-rise barrel jeans, while Zoë Kravitz’s slightly slimmer pair reminds me of her loose-bow Alida jeans.

Dark wash jeans

Dark washes are making a big comeback, and for good reason: They’re just as easy to style, but with a more modern, pants-like look. Katie Holmes has added a pair of zero-stretch, wide-leg jeans in a dark wash to her capsule collection with APC. Kaia Gerber has worn the Romi Mid-Rise Wide Leg by Ètica several times with the Walker Jean by Still Here. And Meghan Markle tends to wear exclusively dark wash denim in skinny and straight-leg silhouettes.

Straight leg jeans

Straight-leg jeans never go out of style, so calling them trendy feels a little blasphemous. Nevertheless, they will be particularly popular in celebrities’ wardrobes in fall 2024. Kendall Jenner has worn Khaite’s coveted Danielle jeans several times. Dua Lipa seems to prefer Celine Margaret jeans more than any other style. Of course, Katie Holmes would probably agree that you can’t go wrong with a classic pair of Levi’s 501s – ideally purchased vintage and then tailored at a shop like The Consistency Project.
