We owe our dry and warm spell of weather this week to high pressure. Long-haul models are keeping the forecast for the coming weekend fairly constant. With sun and clouds, both Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to a weak front this weekend, highs will cool slightly and return to near average. Expect highs in the 80s on Saturday and in the 70s and 80s on Sunday.

Speaking of dry weather, the new drought monitor released Thursday morning shows an expansion of moderate drought across much of central Alabama, with parts of western Alabama now experiencing severe drought periods. Unfortunately, the situation is likely to get worse before it gets better, as we don’t see any significant, widespread chance of rain any time soon. The next drought monitor update will be Thursday morning this week.

On the trail of the tropics: Oscar and Nadine joined forces in the Atlantic Ocean this weekend in what sounds like an ill-conceived sequel to the Bonnie and Clyde story.

Nadine formed and was quickly pulled west into Central America, while Oscar made landfall on the northeast coast of Cuba and is now expected to curve northeast toward Turks and Caicos and the southern Bahamas later this week. Neither storm poses a threat to the continental United States.
