Interview: “His Three Daughters” filmmaker Azazel Jacobs on what the film means to him

For the many reasons for this His three daughters Is such a touching work the personal touch of the filmmaker? Azazel Jacobs gives to it. While he created the characters he played Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth OlsenAnd Jay O Sandersthey all feel like people we know. Jacobs clearly knows her, in a profound way. A year after its acclaimed debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film is now available to watch on Netflix. I recently sat down with Jacobs to discuss the flick. Today this chat is coming your way.

In my review here, I had this to say about Jacobs and his filmmaking:

Writer/Director Azazel Jacobs This is where it really breaks through, it’s a bittersweet work that evokes both laughter and tears. The directing is admittedly simple and makes you wonder if this was once a play, but the writing is just so good. The complexity of the individual characters, especially Lyonne, is incredible. Everything builds up incredibly well, even up to the moment that moved me so much. Jacobs has been doing interesting work for years, but His three daughters is on a completely different level.

You can listen to my conversation with Jacobs below. We talked a little bit about the Mets at the beginning of the recording, but it picks up right after that. I was interested in learning more about all aspects of the work, including what it means for Jacobs to be at the finish line. He’s very thoughtful with his answers, so the discussion goes to some interesting places. We also spend a lot of time talking about Sanders’ character, which I don’t think comes up with him as much as it does with the sisters. It’s a beautiful lecture for a beautiful film. If you haven’t seen it yet His three daughters Nevertheless, the film is on Netflix and a must…
