Board Game Adaptations: Could the Film Industry Expand Even Further?

Different aspects of life have inspired many films. Some are inspired by things common in popular culture, others are based on true stories.

One can argue that there is still a gap to be filled across the industry. Perhaps a few more film adaptations could be made, especially if many popular activities are left out.

Games have always been very popular with Hollywood directors

Although games have often been a popular source of inspiration for filmmakers, there seem to be some types of games that haven’t received the same treatment as others. Many have been to a casino and enjoyed playing at the blackjack or roulette table when they fully understood the rules of the games being played. Maybe in the future there will be a market where we can see films based on these classic tabletop games. It would be interesting to see what directors come up with, especially since they have new, innovative ways to bring ideas to life that have never been produced before.

As mentioned, games were used to create stories that could be told on the big screen. Several box office films have been created based on the entertainment form, and it’s not hard to see why.

Gaming has become an extremely popular entertainment medium. Video games are the most popular worldwide with over 3.32 billion players. This number is believed to be at least a billion higher than it was eight years ago (2016).

Board games have been adapted into films

Although video games have proven popular, board games are also very popular. Before technology took over and created digitalized forms of gaming, board games were the primary source of gaming for many. They provided fun entertainment for individuals who played and were accessible to almost everyone.

Many of them are iconic. Most people will know about Jumanji and the game that came from it because of the films. Others are familiar with the Ouija board, which has garnered a lot of attention on the big screen. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released in 2023, and as that trend continues, it was recently revealed that the iconic Monopoly game will be getting the same treatment as so many board games before it.

It is already available in many other forms of entertainment and has been adapted into a documentary, a video game and even iGaming titles such as the live casino game show title and the Monopoly slot, both of which can be played. However, it will now get the Hollywood treatment. Margot Robbie is said to be working with Hasbro to produce a film based on the popular board game, following the actress’s success with Barbie. Her production company LuckyChap, which worked on Barbie, will work with Lionsgate to try to bring the board game to life as another form of entertainment.

Should the film industry use board games for new ideas?

Hollywood is always looking for new ways to captivate as many viewers as possible. Attitudes toward film are constantly changing, especially as technologies evolve to enable new viewing experiences.

Board games can satisfy many audience preferences and demands. They can provide a new way to remember a classic activity. They can unlock previous memories and evoke emotions related to the film, evoking feelings that other films cannot match.

Of course, they may be harder to approach since they may not be the most imaginative, but if the new adaptation of “Monopoly” is successful, Hollywood may have no choice but to continue considering them.
