Live updates: Israeli air strikes on Lebanon and Gaza, war with Hamas and Hezbollah

Israeli attacks caused casualties and damage in various parts of Lebanon overnight, according to Lebanon’s national news agency NNA.

In eastern Lebanon, Israeli strikes targeted the town of Baalbek and the nearby town of Hizzine, NNA reported. Numerous casualties were reported and rescue efforts were underway to remove people from the rubble.

Israeli strikes also targeted the southern coastal city of Tyre, destroying a building and damaging several surrounding homes, NNA reported. Several Israeli attacks also targeted various cities in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli military had previously issued evacuation warnings for some areas in Lebanon, including Tyre.

The Israeli military said Sunday that its air force carried out strikes in Beirut, southern Lebanon, and “deep in Lebanese territory,” targeting Hezbollah sites where money used by the organization’s military wing was stored.

The funds were stored at the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, which directly finances the groups’ activities, “including purchasing.” [of] Weapons and payments to operatives in Hezbollah’s military wing,” the Israeli military said.

Some background information: Founded in 1983, Al-Qard Al-Hassan is a nonprofit financial institution with ties to Hezbollah, according to Hezbollah-affiliated television channel Al-Manar. It offers interest-free loans to alleviate poverty within the Shia community, based on Islamic principles of interest-free lending, says Al-Manar.
