The New York Mets ended their 2024 season on Sunday night with a 10-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. As the Dodgers advance to the World Series to face the New York Yankees, the Mets advance into the offseason. The most important assumption of the offseason is that long-time and popular slugger Pete Alonso played his final game with the Mets on Sunday. That’s because Alonso is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason and the expectation is that the Mets will let him walk away and sign elsewhere without further committing to a contract extension.

Alonso raised that very possibility after Game 6 – that he has stopped playing for the only team he knows as a professional.

“I loved being a New York Met,” Alonso told reporters Sunday night. “I love representing the city of New York. I love representing Queens. That was really special.”

Here are his full remarks:

Alonso is an organizational talent – a Met since he was drafted with a second-round pick in 2016. He hit a memorable 53 homers as a rookie in 2019 and has a total of 226 homers in six seasons. In 2024 he was productive again, although not quite at the level of his peak performance. Senior decision maker David Stearns is probably hesitant to invest market interest in a first baseman who may already be showing slight signs of decline and who turns 30 in December. With this in mind, it seems very likely that Alonso will play for a different team next year. You’ll notice that Alonso spoke about the Mets in the past tense above.

No matter how the future unfolds, Alonso will always be a beloved figure among Mets fans, and that won’t change even if he plays for someone else.
