Steve Kerr nears Warriors’ rotation decision for 2024-25 NBA season – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SAN FRANCISCO – Steve Kerr hasn’t figured out exactly what the Warriors’ rotations will look like next season, although the veteran coach has indicated he’s getting closer to a decision.

With three days left until Golden State opens the 2024-25 season in Portland, time is running out for Kerr to finalize his plans. That’s exactly what he did as the Warriors completed the final days of practice before things got serious on Wednesday.

Part of the dilemma Kerr faces is figuring out who to start and who the Warriors’ key players will be coming off the bench.

That hadn’t been a big problem in previous years when the coach had the luxury of using the core trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson every night. But with Thompson now in Dallas and the Warriors having a roster with names like Kyle Anderson, De’Anthony Melton and Buddy Hield, it hasn’t been so easy for Kerr and his crew to sort things out.

A perfect example of this is second-year Brandin Podziemski, who started two games this preseason but only came off the bench in the other games he played in. At the time, Kerr said he liked the idea of Podziemski leading the second unit.

Andrew Wiggins is another player who could fit well with the starters but has the ability to really excel in the second unit.

“I have an idea of what I’m going to do, but this is the hardest decision-making I’ve had since I’ve been here as far as who plays off the bench,” Kerr said Sunday. “Like I said, I feel comfortable playing against every single player in the rotation, and I can’t do that. I’m excited, but I won’t feel great on Wednesday if I miss a few guys.”

Kerr said the Warriors strengthened their offense by adopting some of the methods and ideas that new assistant coach Terry Stotts used as the Trail Blazers’ head coach.

The Warriors will look to get more comfortable and crisp on offense with some of these new things while improving defensively by Wednesday.

“We need to be a lot more solid defensively,” Kerr said. “We need to continue to work on reporting specific actions that we will see on a regular basis. And we need to continue to learn some of the new offensive things that we’re introducing.”
